The PNC Christmas Price Index

November 30, 2010

Christopher Jobson

It’s been weeks if not months since I’ve seen a truly engaging Flash-based website that I’ve felt the desire to explore as the designers intended. So this crazy interactive site for the 27th PNC Christmas Index completely blew me away and goes to show that Flash definitely has its place for some online experiences. So just what is the PNC Christmas Index?

PNC is the third largest bank in the US and each year, for the last 27 years, they have compared the prices of the gifts in the song “12 days of Christmas” and compared them to the years before.

The brief was to make a pop-up book out of the price index. A straightforward brief with a lot of room to be creative. The solution we opted for was a full 3D render with a linear but very much interactive storyline. We wanted to give a very simple interaction but give full control and therefore possibility to see the book fold in and out.

The result is a funny mix of a childish and very lifelike pop-up book filled with highly valuable financial information.

Check out the full experience PNC Christmas Index site. The creative director behind the project was Pelle Martin, and you can see lots of sketches and behind the scenes work in his portfolio. Very nice work.

Ohhhh my goodness. The Consollection graphic has been updated to include more game systems with added detail and is now finally a print which you can purchase and hang in the most prominent part of your household.

170 videogame systems are shown as miniatures in chronological order. Every system is presented with name, manufacturer and release date. A nice overview over 38 years of videogame-history.

As usual, great infographic work from Good in collaboration with Column Five. Hm, I bet you could hide a lot of weapons of mass destruction down there. The US might need to permanently investigate that. (via coudal)

Writing Without Words by Stefanie Posavec

October 25, 2010

Christopher Jobson

This image by Stefanie Posavec represents all of the sentences in On the Road by Jack Kerouac. Each line is organized according to the number of words per sentence, and the sentences are color-coded according to theme. This is only one of many killer infographics in Posavec’s Writing Without Words series in which she attempts to visually organize the language of books. Prints available. A great promo to attract students into the graduate program at Dare, a large interactive agency in London.

On a related note, this infographic trailer for Waiting for Superman is killer.

One Million by Hendrik Hertzberg is a new edition of a 1970s book that helps the average joe comprehend just how large one million is. Each of its 200 pages has 5,000 dots and occasionally individual dots are highlighted for their statistical significance. (via fastco)
