At its core the basic premise of this photo series by Italian photographer and designer Francesco Brunotti isn’t something tremendously new, that is the digital removal of objects from images, for instance Seats by Jens Sage. But in its art direction and execution something wonderful emerges and I found myself smiling hugely. See his first series, and the second.

Toss the G.I. Joes and the Transformers in the trash. Japanese company General Research has created this limited edition set of polyurethane Mountain Men as part of their February Mountain Research series. And by mountain men they’re of course referring to German philosopher Karl Marx, Chairman Mao “a Chinese revolutionary and Guerrilla warfare strategist,” Vladimir Lenin a “Russian revolutionary and political philosopher,” and Henry David Thoreau the American writer and poet. So what do two communists, a German philosopher, and an American poet have in common? I have no idea whatsoever. And other than Thoreau I think it’s questionable whether any of these men had ever climbed a mountain. But these toys are totally geek-tastic, well designed, and are still in stock here. Almost an antithesis to yesterday’s clip about the Salton Sea, this short film by Leonardo Dalessandri walks us through a small area of southern Italy, exploring the residents, landscapes, and small moments of daily life that through the lens of this filmmaker are nothing short of magical. All the more spectacular to me is the inclusion of music by Isao Tomita (mentioned here previously). This particular track being something my dad used to rock me to sleep to, giving this whole thing a layer of bizarre nostalgia for a place I’ve never been. I think you’ll agree with me when I say: I want to go to there.

While we’re on the theme of teeny tiny art, here are some fun photo manipulations by Barcelona-based Maite Guerrero. It’s rare anything digital like this makes it onto Colossal, but there is such care in how each one of these is created, the attention to color, depth, and scale makes these truly special. An awesome new piece entitled Bust V (Grandfather) by Jeremy Mayer who disassembles typewriters and reassembles them into human and animal figures without the use of solder, weld, or glue (or even objects that don’t originate from typewriters).
Though the trend of desaturated photographs of people floating has reached a fever pitch, this unique take on the idea by Jens Sage caught my attention. More of his work here.
