Blitzstein Exhibit

Blitzstein Exhibit wood portraits painting abstract

I admit, I don’t know the story behind this one. It popped up on suplove (warning, music) a few hours ago and is entitled simply “Blitzstein Exhibit” and is dated 1994 on the bottom. Edvard Munch approved.

Update: Via email Nathan Bowers says: “The Blitzstein Exhibit is on Fairfax in L.A. Across the street from Canter’s Deli. The piece you linked is in the storefront window. I can’t tell if the place is a gallery or a studio because I’ve never seen anyone inside and none of the pieces have seemed to move since at least 1996. Mysterious!” It looks like this is a piece by Harry Blitzstein, and here he is jumping rope on a trampoline. Thanks Nathan!

Michael Murphy’s solo show, LOOK, recently opened at gallery nine5 in New York. His artworks span a wide variety of media including multi-layered 3D sculptures, sound installations, and paintings with materials including nails, shadows, water, and sandblasted bullet-proof glass. Some of my favorite pieces are shown above, and you can see more in the show’s catalogue. Better yet, stop by gallery nine5 through October 6. (thnx, irina!)

Artist Mary Ellen Croteau was working on an artwork involving plastic bottle caps, creating tall endless strings that are strung vertically in colorful columns. She repeatedly noticed how some of the caps would fit neatly inside of one another creating new color combinations similar to the portraits of Chuck Close. Inspired, she became sidetracked and embarked on her own self portrait using the colors that “naturally” appeared in the bottle cap plastic.

This work was submitted by John Mangahas as part of the Curatorial Contest of Awesomness that was held this past week on Facebook. We received nearly 100 submissions and the six winners and the awesome work they brought to my attention will be blogged about over the next few days. Side note: I had Megan help me sort through the 90+ submissions, and of our individual lists of the “best” six items, four were identical. What!

Missed out on all the action? Don’t worry, based on the success of this contest I’ll be doing another one soon, probably here on the blog itself. For now, go ahead and follow along via Facebook or Twitter as there’s lots of stuff happening in both places that doesn’t always end up here!

Almasty is a design studio out of Paris comprised of Anna Apter and Charles Bataillie. I’m really enjoying their illustration work, especially from the two projects above, one from a self-initiated project called Rumeurs and the other for Trois Couleurs magazine on behalf of design firm MK2. The Paul is Dead gif is simply brilliant.

Joeri Bosma

This shot from photographer Joeri Bosma caught my eye. He’s based out of the Netherlands and his work reminds me somewhat of Nicholas Max and Egor Shapovalov.
