Laminated Jewelry Crafted from Vintage Books by Jeremy May

November 14, 2017

Laura Staugaitis

New work from literary jeweler Jeremy May (previously) transforms the dense layers of books into jewelry that carries the words within each individual, wearable form. Littlefly, his line of rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, reinstalls the finished jewelry in the book that it was originally extracted from, but each piece also has a life of its own with abstract patterns and sculptural shapes.

August 3, 2016

The jeweler Secret Wood (previously) has been producing even more miniature cities and landscapes, each ethereal universe living inside a resin geometric dome on top of their handmade wooden rings. In addition to buildings set against swirling skies, there are also works that contain tiny flowers, pieces that will eternally live on top of one’s finger. You can see more one-of-a-kind rings on their online store, Instagram, and Facebook. (via My Modern Met)

Formed from wood, resin, and beeswax, Canadian jeweler Secret Wood forms tiny worlds within the space of a finger. These environments contain everything from snowcapped mountains to deep blue lagoons, appearing like tiny snow globes atop one’s hand. Like a gemstone, each ring has an angular surface, refracting the scenes carefully placed within. Every piece is completely handmade, ensuring that no two rings are exactly alike. You can see more of the jeweler’s rings on their online store and Facebook. (via My Modern Met)

Vintage Books Transformed Into Layered Rings, Bracelets, and Pendants by Jeremy May

Jewelry maker Jeremy May designs wearable pieces from the layered pages of vintage books, transforming their content into unique works that are nearly impossible to trace back to their paper origin. To make these multi-shaped works, May first laminates hundreds of sheets of paper together. He then creates the shape for the piece, and finishes it off with a high gloss coating. After production, May often inserts the works back into the books, bringing the transformed and colorful pages back to their material source.

Although many of the pieces lose the words and images on the book’s original pages, some preserve hints to the jewelry’s former life in snippets of text or photographs that make it onto the final piece. Each ring or bracelet he produces is formed through a book that May finds inspiring, allowing the jewelry’s content to match its pleasing aesthetic.

The London-based artist is a part of the group exhibition “Read and Worn: Jewelry From Books” at RR Gallery in New York City through April 24. (via My Modern Met)

Twelve currencies folded into rings

May 11, 2011

Christopher Jobson

After attending an interactive design workshop, Sophie Kemp was tasked with redesigning the parameters of a common interaction. For her project she chose the generous though often uninspiring act of giving money.

I decided to take the cold cut process of giving people money and enhance the experience of this action. I decided to take a dollar bill and use origami folds to make it into a ring as the giving of a ring has such emotional connections. I then made these rings out of 12 different currencies.

I’ve seen my fair share of folded origami rings, and maybe even struggled through making one myself in grade school, but seeing that same process applied across the layouts of different paper bill designs is pretty awesome. (via creative review)
