Shoe-Shi: Edible Sneakers That Combine an Artist’s Love of Footwear and Sushi

May 15, 2017

Kate Sierzputowski

Milan-based Yujia Hu is an artist and chef who really likes to play with his food. The 28-year-old’s newest invention is “shoe shi,” sneakers and other types of footwear crafted from rice, seaweed, and raw fish. The miniature kicks are mostly sneakers, but also include a few pairs of slip on sandals, and are each 100% edible. Every shoe takes Hu about 30 minutes to produce, and often finalizes the work by adding the logo of a recognisable brand such as Nike, Adidas, or Supreme. You can see more of his edible edible shoes on his Instagram and Facebook. (via deMilked)

Have your sushi and … dry off with it, too. Designer Jenny Pokryvailo came up with this amusing concept for a series of towels that when properly folded resemble different types of maki rolls. You may previously recognize Pokryvailo’s design work from her wildly popular (and equally quirky) Nessie Ladle, Sardine Paper Clips, and Rainbow Marker Set. (via Laughing Squid)

This 45-Piece Wooden Sushi Set Will Make Kids Dream of Sushi

May 28, 2014

There are many wooden sushi sets out there for kids but this one, created by Japanese design firm plaplax, takes the cake. Or more appropriately, the fish. It consists of 45 wooden pieces that help teach kids about shari (the bite-sized vinegar rice) and neta (the fish topping). Kids can rearrange the shari and neta to create their own culinary masterpiece. The set was originally created for a kid-friendly exhibition last year, but you can now buy your very own “tsumiki sushi”. They’re going for 7,400 yen a pop and if you order before July 2014 your meal will ship in August. (syndicated from Spoon & Tamago)

April 5, 2011

Christopher Jobson

Love the design of these awesome sushi memo pads. They’re available here for about $21, but you’ll need to know Japanese. Anyone want to know Japanese for me? (via matomeno)
