A Nondescript Character Sheds Suits of Fur, Bubbling Liquids, and Gnarly Wood in Hypnotic CGI Animation

From gurgling liquids to crackling fire to rainbow-colored fur, a range of materials envelop an indistinct figure in Universal Everything’s new animation. "Transfiguration" follows a central character as it wades across the screen wearing full-coverage suits that evolve with each step. Despite the mesmerizing changes in appearance, the figure never walks farther than mid-frame. To create this new, CGI animation, Universal Everything (previously) updated a similar piece from 2011. The United Kingdom-based art and design studio engages in a wide range of digital projects, which you can find on Vimeo and Instagram.

Run Forever: A Figure Undergoes Metamorphosis as It Trudges Through Myriad Environments

The team at Universal Everything is back with its latest video artwork, "Run Forever," that stars a now-familiar nondescript figure as it gradually changes from material to material. While previous projects in the series have focused on structure and texture, this new short was created in collaboration with Hyundai Motorstudio as a metaphor for the group's efforts toward sustainable design and green energy. "Run Forever" seems to turn its focus toward light, both as an artistic medium and as an energy source, as the figure suddenly blooms into a mass of plants. You can follow more of Universal Everything's digital…

Hoards of Anonymous Figures React to a User-Controlled Character in an Interactive World by Universal Everything

UK design studio Universal Everything (previously) is in the midst of crafting an experimental open-world environment called Emergence, available in a preview film. In Emergence, the glowing yellow user-controlled character is surrounded by crowds of anonymous people who react to the character's movements. The scenes are set in a variety of abstracted but familiar environments like city streets and under water. Presumably, the viewer will be able to control the figure in a VR or immersive gallery setting. Universal Everything explains the experience on their Vimeo page: Emergence is an open-world environment, expressing the primal feeling of maintaining your individual identity…

Futuristic Shapes Mirror Human Movement in a Responsive Animation by Universal Everything

A new project designed by the global design collective Universal Everything (previously here and here) mimics the unique movements of visitors at the entrance of the exhibition AI: More Than Human at The Barbican in London. Future You presents a non-human animated figure that wiggles, shifts, and bends in tandem with the user, presenting up to 47,000 possible variations in appearance. The animation also evolves alongside the user, becoming more agile as it learns movements specific to the visitor's body. The exhibition opened earlier this month and runs through August 26, 2019. You can see more animated and responsive…

Walking City: An Evolving Video Sculpture Morphs in Response to Architecture

Anyone who follows Colossal knows that digital animation and motion graphics are a rarity here, but this clip is a solid exception. Created by Universal Everything, Walking City is a slowly evolving video sculpture that gradually changes form through dozens of permutations while the core motion, the act of walking, remains the same. Via Universal Everything: Referencing the utopian visions of 1960’s architecture practice Archigram, Walking City is a slowly evolving video sculpture. The language of materials and patterns seen in radical architecture transform as the nomadic city walks endlessly, adapting to the environments she encounters. At almost 8 minutes…
