Vintage Typewriters Are Reassembled into Amazing Metallic Bird Sculptures by Jeremy Mayer

Jeremy Mayer challenges the notion that typewriters' creative output is confined to the written word. The artist scours shops and trash bins near his Bay Area studio for analog processors in disrepair that he then disassembles, sorts, and reconstructs into metallic sculptures. His previous works include symmetrical assemblages, anatomical recreations, and an ongoing series of birds, the most recent of which are shown here. Mayer builds every piece solely from original parts rather than soldering or gluing, and some sculptures, including the black crow with a Corona-brand typewriter…

Symmetrical Typewriter Sculptures by Artist Jeremy Mayer Merge the Organic and Manufactured

"There’s nothing unnatural about mechanical components," Jeremy Mayer says. For decades, the artist has harbored a fascination with the repetitive, complex patterns of single-cell organisms and the delicately rendered illustrations of Ernst Haeckel, an attraction that manifests in his latest sculptures. Spanning up to 65 inches, Mayer's metal artworks are comprised of old typewriter parts mounted around a laser-cut aluminum frame with only the original screws, nuts, pins, and springs holding the mirrorlike pieces together. Formed around a central, circular element, the multi-unit…

New Typewriter Part Birds by Jeremy Mayer

Artist Jeremy Mayer (previously) just completed this beautiful set of swallows using assembled typewriter parts. The pieces required Mayer to find multiple sets of identical parts adding a significant amount of time to sourcing materials, but as a happy accident the artist also discovered his design allowed for the wings to partially retract. If you're unfamiliar with Mayer's work it might surprise you to know that he doesn't use solder or glue (or even objects that haven't originated from a typewriter), but instead assembles everything using only native parts. You can follow his progress for this and other projects over…

An Ornate Truck Spot-Welded from Thousands of Reflective Steel Disks by Valay Shende

Transit is a 2010 sculpture by Mumbai-based artist Valay Shende depicting a life-size work truck that carries figures of 22 people. Created over a period of 18 months, the piece was constructed from thousands of reflective stainless steel disks that have been individually spot welded together. Shende conceived of Transit as commentary on a dramatic rash of farmer sucides in India over the last decade. The truck's rearview mirrors display video footage of roadways in London, Mumbai and Dubai, as if the vehicle is moving from the perspective of the driver's seat but in reality it remains stationary. Transit is…

Skull Made of Typewriter Parts by Jeremy Mayer

Artist Jeremy Mayer (previously) recently completed a new sculpture titled Skull I made from vintage typewriter parts. As with all of his assemblages the skull was created without use of welding or adhesives, instead the parts are bent, screwed, and bolted into place using only components extracted from typewriters.
