Winter Is Coming: A Photographic Tribute to 'Game of Thrones' by Kilian Schönberger

April 14, 2019

Andrew LaSane

In honor of the final season of Games of Thrones, German photographer Kilian Schönberger (previously) has translated his ethereal photography of central Europe’s icy landscapes, mystical castles, and foggy forests into a photographic tribute. Inspired by the frozen fantasy world of George R.R. Martin’s books and by the geography of his native lands, Schönberger’s alternate storyline imagines snow-covered trees as menacing White Walkers, towering mountain ranges as The Wall, and ancient stone structures as home to the highborn families of Westeros. Schönberger tells Colossal that the photographs published in his online tribute were taken in forests along the German-Czech border,…

Frozen Landscapes Tell a Winter’s Tale in New Photographs by Kilian Schönberger

March 1, 2018

Laura Staugaitis

German photographer Kilian Schönberger (previously) is known for capturing otherworldly images of his natural surroundings. His latest series, Winter’s Tale, was shot in the mountain ranges of Germany and central Europe and showcases the desaturated, hushed landscapes of snow-covered forests. Schönberger describes the mystical quality of his Winter’s Tale series: “Winter was the time when tales and legends were told at home, the whole family sitting around the tiled stove. Thanks to Hari & Deepti, Meow Wolf, Daniel Mullen, Warren Keelan, and Kilian Schönberger for helping kick things off. A big shout out to Lui Ferreyra for our fancy new bio portraits. And lastly a hat tip to our generous web host Media Temple and their CloudTech staff who have kept things humming smoothly behind the scenes here for years….

Otherworldly 'Earth Pyramids' Captured in the Foggy Early Morning Light by Photographer Kilian Schönberger

September 27, 2017

Kate Sierzputowski

Photographer Kilian Schönberger (previously) climbed the Alps late at night to capture one of the mountain range’s strangest segments, alien-like columns found in South Tyrol, an autonomous province in Northern Italy. His series Otherworld showcases the so-called “earth pyramids” in a hazy dawn light, strange creations that appear like stalagmites freed from their underground caves. The structures are created by erosion, rising from clay soil left behind by glaciers from the last Ice Age. Each features a large boulder resting on top which protects the soil below. Eventually the tall columns lose the strength to hold the large rock overhead,…

The Crooked Forest: A Mysterious Grove of 400 Oddly Bent Pine Trees in Poland

…near the base at 90 degrees, a form that could possibly be helpful in boat or furniture making. Strangely enough, every tree is bent in exactly the same direction: due North. A quick search online reveals a host of conspiracy theories ranging from witchcraft to energy fields. Whatever the reason, we’re glad photographer Kilian Schönberger (previously) stopped by to capture these photos. You can see more from the series on Behance. Update: Thank you all for your many, many suggestions about the trees. We’ve heard everything from floods to furniture to fire. There still doesn’t seem to be a consensus….
