Using Naturally Dyed Cotton, Artist Sipho Mabona Explores Transformation through Origami

The artist dyes the porous material with natural substances like indigo and Maclura tinctoria (mulberry), which creates organic gradients and alters its texture. He then utilizes Origami creases to transform the cotton’s structure and shape, sometimes working in response to current affairs. Artist Sipho Mabona Successfully Folds Life-sized Origami Elephant from Single Sheet of Paper

All photos by Philipp Schmidli Following a successful campaign on Indiegogo which raised nearly $26,000, artist Sipho Mabona followed through on his promise to fold a life-sized elephant from a single giant sheet of paper. The piece stands over 10 feet tall (3 meters) and took a team of nearly a dozen people over four weeks to fold. The final sculpture is on view at KKLB in Beromünster, Switzerland. Origami Artist Sipho Mabona Will Attempt to Fold a Life-Sized Elephant from a Single Piece of Paper

Swiss origami master Sipho Mabona (previously) plans to fold a massive life-sized elephant from a specially produced 2,500 square foot (125 sqm) sheet of paper at the Art Museum in Beromünster, Switzerland. Titled White Elephant, the artist is currently raising funds for the endeavor through Indiegogo so he can fund the production of paper and hopefully film the project in a timelapse video similar to the animation above. Mabona also just completed a fun origami installation for the Japanese American National Museum in L.A. featuring a swarm of locusts folded from uncut sheets of U.S. currency.
