Naps: A Sleepy Compilation Captures an Array of Animals and Humans Mid-Slumber

April 14, 2020

Grace Ebert

From drowsy ducklings to kids fast asleep in the backseat, a short compilation by New York-based filmmaker Daniel Mercadante (previously) gathers an adorable mix of animals and humans who are too tired to keep their eyes open. "Naps" catches tiny kittens nodding off and babies in the midst of dreamy slumbers and is a follow-up to "Yawns," a similarly soporific compilation. Mercadante said his motivation for assembling the clips is simply "because we could all use a good nap from time to time." Head to Vimeo and Instagram for more of the filmmaker's collection-based projects.

Vivid Rainbow Roads Trace Illuminated Pathways Across Forests and Beaches

June 6, 2018

Laura Staugaitis

Daniel Mercadante has a slate of unique films under his belt, made in partnership with his wife Katina, as The Mercadantes, including Ball and Breathe. More recently, Daniel has been exploring the still image in a colorful series called Rainbow Road. The Mercadantes were based in California for many years, but after a move to rural Connecticut, Daniel looked for a way to add some warmth to the chilly blue hour during the Northeast's long winters. Using long exposure photography and a  custom built lighting rig covered in colored gels, the process of creating the images is surprisingly simple: the roads…

It's impossible to grasp the scope of every last sculpture, painting, and installation, but included here is a small selection of pieces the crowds are buzzing about inside the three large indoor gallery spaces at Dismaland. You can see our additional coverage of the event here, and Evan over at Juxtapoz managed to get an…

Welcome to Dismaland: A First Look at Banksy’s New Art Exhibition Housed Inside a Dystopian Theme Park

August 20, 2015

Christopher Jobson

WESTON-SUPER-MARE — Inside the walls of a derelict seaside swimming resort in Weston-super-Mare, UK, mysterious construction over the last month—including a dingy looking Disney-like castle and a gargantuan rainbow-colored pinwheel tangled in plastic—suggested something big was afoot. Suspicion and anticipation surrounding the unusual activity attributed to fabled artist and provocateur Banksy has reached a Willy Wonka-esque fervor. Well, if Banksy's your bag, continue fervoring. If not, there's more than a few reasons to continue reading. The spectacle has since been…

Breath: A Stunning New Collection Film Exploring How We Breathe

January 28, 2015

Christopher Jobson

Over the past few years the production team at The Mercadantes (formerly known as Everynone) have created a legendary reputation for their unique brand of collection films, where similar objects, ideas, or actions are gathered into a video montage. If you haven't seen Words, Ball, or especially Symmetry, I recommend spending the next 20 minutes of your life doing that. Their latest film is Breath, a meditation on the myriad ways in which people breath. While it may not sound like much in a description, the short packs an emotional wallop, bouncing between the extremes of life and death to…
