Elaborate Geometric Origami by Arseni Kazhamiakin Tessellates Sheets of Colorful Paper

Gomel, Belarus-based origami artist Arseni Kazhamiakin creates transfixing tessellations using colorful sheets of paper. The artist has been creating his own designs since 2013, and notes that he uses everyday paper "of questionable quality." Each completed work is meticulously documented from above, and some works are illuminated from behind to show the hidden interior layers. Fold an Elaborate Origami Menagerie with DIY Instructions from Jo Nakashima

Since 2010, Brazilian origami artist Jo Nakashima has amassed a trove of original designs ranging from modular cubes and kinetic works to multicolor, angular wildlife. Two Elaborately Armored Origami Knights Arise from a Single Sheet of Paper

Origami marvel Juho Könkkölä continues to amaze us with his troop of intricately folded warriors of his own design. Following an elaborately armored samurai and sword-and-shield-toting knight, the Finnish artist just released his latest work featuring two characters as they prepare for a fight. Similar to his previous pieces, Könkkölä used a single sheet of 95 x 95 centimeter Wenzhou paper with wet and dry origami techniques—watch his entire process in the timelapse below—to fold the dueling figures. The finished work, which stands 25 x 20 x 20…

Folds in Recurring Patterns Form the Tessellated Origami Sculptures by Goran Konjevod

Whether folding flat, square tessellations or rounded forms that billow from a central point, origami artist Goran Konjevod (previously) focuses on the tension inherent in a single sheet of material. His sculptures draw on his background in mathematics and computer science and configure precise geometries, fanned pleats, and small woven pieces that appear to be individual strips threaded together rather than a series of carefully aligned creases. Each form is a meticulous blend of texture, pattern, and dimension that's translated into elegant, abstract constructions through repetitive folds. In recent…

Precise Geometry and Color Gradients Undulate in Anna Kruhelska’s Three-Dimensional Paper Sculptures

In the meticulous folds of Anna Kruhelska’s paper sculptures, contrasts of light, shadow, and hue give the impression of undulating motion. An abiding interest in form, symmetry, and space developed from the Lodz-based artist's work as an architect, combining precise engineering and design skills with and interest in geometry and origami. Reminiscent of the spatial explorations of Günther Oecker, humble materials form delicate patterns to create perception-bending, three-dimensional wall pieces. Kruhelska's earliest sculptures were constructed from white paper, which demonstrated how exact cuts and creases highlight the interplay…

Seven Origami Animals Transform New York City’s Garment District into a Vibrant Menagerie

Thanks to Gerardo Gomez-Martinez (aka Hacer), the public plazas on Broadway in New York City's Garment District are now a zoo of origami-style animals. The Mexican-American artist installed a series of powder-coated steel sculptures that loom over dining areas and walkways as part of Transformations. Commissioned by The Garment District Alliance, the project consists of seven creatures that vary in size, including a yellow dog, a magenta elephant, a green bear cub, and two turquoise rabbits and coyotes, one of which extends…
