New Architecturally-Inspired Artworks Created From Layers of Laser-Cut Paper by Eric Standley

May 16, 2017

Kate Sierzputowski

…“When a DNA braid is viewed from the top-down, the layered double helix rotation abides by the golden ratio (phi). Waves along the braid conceal and reveal strata of information.” Standley applied this golden ratio during the construction process for his pieces Kismet and Phidala. Using phi as a guide for certain compositional decisions, Standley deviated from his typically strict mathematical rotations. Standley’s solo exhibition Strata at Marta Hewett Gallery in Cincinnati, Oh contains both of these new phi-centered works, and continues through June 3, 2017. You can see more of the artist’s works on his website. Phidala, detail. Cut…

Elaborate New Laser-Cut Paper Windows by Eric Standley Borrow Patterns from Art History and Architecture

July 10, 2015

Christopher Jobson

Ithica. Cut paper, 20″ x 26″, 2015 In an exquisite nexus of mathematics, art history, and technology, artist Eric Standley (previously) creates densely stacked layers of laser-cut paper to form sculptures reminiscent of Islamic architecture or Gothic rose windows. If you’ve followed the artist’s work here on Colossal it’s clear his understanding of geometry, shape and color as it applies to paper structures has expanded greatly over the last few years as his artworks grow increasingly intricate and detailed. The pieces have also grown in scale and depth with his latest pieces standing over two feet tall. Standley currently has…

Geometric Laser-Cut Wood Relief Sculptures by Gabriel Schama

April 1, 2015

Christopher Jobson

Working with precisely cut 1/8″ pieces of laser-cut mahogany plywood, Oakland-based artist Gabriel Schama creates densely layered wood relief sculptures that twist, intersect, and overlap to create various mandala-like forms. Each piece begins as a vector illustration which is fed into his laser cutter (which he named Elsie), and is then glued and finished by hand. Collected here are a number of recent sculptures produced after a successful Kickstarter project, and he has several new pieces in his shop. If you liked this, also check out these laser-cut works by Eric Standley and Martin Tomsky. (via Hi-Fructose)…

Stained Glass Windows Made from Stacked Laser-Cut Paper by Eric Standley

August 6, 2014

Christopher Jobson

Either/Or Newmarch. Cut paper, 20″x20″, 2014. Virginia-based artist Eric Standley (previously) brings a whole new meaning to the term “cutting edge” with his methodical stained glass windows created entirely from laser-cut paper. Standley stacks well over 100 sheets for many of his pieces which involve months of planning, drawing, and assembly. The artist says his inspiration comes from the geometry found in Gothic and Islamic architectural ornamentation which he somewhat jokingly calls “folk math.” Standley currently has work as part of “Fold, Paper, Scissors” at the Mesa Arts Center in Arizona, and is an included artist in the upcoming book…

Intricate Organic Forms Cut from Paper by Rogan Brown

August 20, 2013

Christopher Jobson

…is an essential element not only in the construction but also in the meaning of each piece. The finished artefact is really only the ghostly fossilized vestige of this slow, long process of realisation. I have chosen paper as a medium because it captures perfectly that mixture of delicacy and durability that for me characterizes the natural world. You can see much more of Brown’s work in higher resolution over in his portfolio, blog, and several original works and prints are currently available at Saatchi Online. If you liked this you might also enjoy the work of Eric Standley, Tomoko…
