Christmas Card to Friends: An Origami Snow Globe

December 29, 2011

Christopher Jobson

It’s so rare that I encounter motion graphic work that I find compelling these days, I don’t think that has anything to do with the industry, it’s just my personal taste. This clip is really special though. Created by Stephen Fitzgerald and Nathan De Ceasar and set to the music of Grant Harold, Christmas Card to Friends was inspired by the accomplished origami works of Robert Lang, Stephen Weiss, Yusuke Muroya, Petr Stuchly, and Beth Johnson. It’s fun to see all that paper goodness in motion, breaking the constraints of a tiny glass snow globe.

Morphology

This is a killer claymation test by animator Peter Sluszka. I can’t imagine how much time it must have taken to accomplish something like this. Really hope it’s part of something longer. (via stellar)

To Give a Present

Animator Kirsten Lepore (previously) was asked by children’s TV show Yo Gabba Gabba to create a stop motion short on the theme of gift giving. This could have easily been done quickly and predictably, but in Lepore’s capable hands it became something wholly more amazing. Adorbs. (via vimeo)

Proteigon: A Geometric Stop Motion Short

December 13, 2011

Animator Steven Briand made this wonderful stop motion animation over a period of two months while working as an intern at Partizan. I love the minimalist style that really focuses your attention on the smallest gestures and paper effects. Gorgeous work. (via vimeo)

A Stop Motion History of the World

Just spotted this wonderfully crafty stop motion piece from director Kevin Parry that follows the history of the world from the big bang through, well, I don’t want to ruin it. Lovely work. (via the awesomer)

Animation on a Bike

Here’s a wonderful zoetrope animation using paper discs mounted on bicycle wheels by Katy Beveridge as part of her 3rd year dissertation project at CSM in London. Beveridge mentions being partially influenced by the technique of Tim Wheatley who has also explored the ideas of bicycle-wheel animation. See many more zoetrope videos previously on Colossal. Address is Approximate is a fun animated short using stop motion animation and stills from Google Street View by UK filmmaker Tom Jenkins. Music by one of my favorites, Cinematic Orchestra. (via vimeo)
