An Animated Embroidered Dog

June 23, 2011

Christopher Jobson

I can say with absolute certainty that in over 1,100 posts on Colossal this is the first featuring an animated gif. This is the work of Atlanta-based Aubrey Longley-Cook who created this animated dog by photographing the backside of the embroideries that it’s made from. (via lustik)

Michael Jackson vs Mr. Bean

May 30, 2011

Christopher Jobson

A new stop motion short from Montreal-based Pascal Blais Studio. This appears to be some sort of self-promotional piece that just appeared on their Vimeo channel without explanation, however I sense the potential for many more of these. Directed by Patrick Boivin from Woolf + Lapin. (via laughing squid)

Edible Zoetropes

May 23, 2011

Christopher Jobson

First we had the Cylotrope and then the Turntable Phonotrope and now the whirling edible creation of Alexandre Dubosc called Alimation created for the 2011 Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Using crepes, cakes, and towers of matches Dubosc attempts to “animate the taste buds.”

Adam Grabowski’s animation machines

May 11, 2011

Christopher Jobson

Film student Adam Grabowski was assigned the task of creating the show packaging for the 2011 Motion Graphics Showcase, at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. In a throwback to early animation he built five animation machines including (in order of appearance) a cassette player thaumatrope, a fan powered hamster wheel, a hand-held blender drum, an awesome motorized skateboard/image belt, and a drill powered flip book. In an age where almost anything you can imagine can be created digitally—especially in the realm of motion graphics—this is a welcome and captivating direction.

Coffee Time Stop-Motion Animation

May 8, 2011

Christopher Jobson

This is designer Ching-Wen Wu’s first foray into stop-motion animation. She was inspired by the SNASK stop-motion short by Mike Crozier, and indeed many of the shots, sequences, and effects are almost identical shot for shot. However Wu’s seems more refined and perfect, it’s hard to believe this is her first attempt at something like this. Some making-of shots here.

Ingenious Balloon Flip Book

May 3, 2011

Christopher Jobson

Director Dulcidio Caldeira of ParanoidBR shot this video for MTV Brazil using a continuous row of balloons imprinted with illustrations that are then sequentially popped to create an ingenious flip book effect. Wowowowow. (via creative review)
