Stitched Portrait Project by Evelin Kasikov

Master of embroidery Evelin Kasikov recently began a new project involving cross stitched portraits. Using an identical grid, each image is created using a mix of geometric stitching styles and thread of varying color and thickness that results in these beautifully pixelated faces. Lace Portrait by Pierre Fouché

This recent portrait by Cape Town-based artist Pierre Fouché was made over a four year period using bobbin lace in polyester thread. I’ve never seen anyone work with lace and can only imagine the immeasurable skill and patience needed to create something this intricate. The portrait will be part of an upcoming solo show at Whatiftheworld Gallery later this year. (via lustik)

Photographic Specimens by Michael Mapes

New York artist Michael Mapes creates elaborate specimen boxes by dissecting photographs and then compartmentalizing individual fragments within plastic bags, glass vials, magnifiers, in gelatin capsules and on insect pins. The boxes exist in an uncanny area between photography and sculpture, functioning both as portraits and as fascinating scientific canvases that make you question the the logic behind the organization of each piece. Urban Cityscapes Spray Painted on Cardboard Panels by EVOL

German street artist EVOL (previously) is currently showing a number of new pieces at Jonathan LeVine gallery. The new works feature urban facades spray painted with the use of stencils on flat sheets of cardboard. Much like his outdoor graffiti, these stencils display an uncanny attention to detail, depicting light and shadow that transforms mundane surfaces of consumer packaging into fascinating, seemingly multi-dimensional pieces of art. I’m really enjoying some of these urban installations by street artist Filthy Luker. His art attacks are fantastic as well as this huge collection of anthropomorphic objects called Street Life.

Reconfigured Sheet Music Collages

I just stumbled onto these beautiful collages by Princeton-based artist Erika Iris who deftly reconfigures sheet music to create portraits and other illustrations. The Beethoven and MLK pieces are especially wonderful, but don’t miss some of her other works with paper or her portraits made from cassette tape and old film.
