Culinary Photographers Create Edible Backdrops for a World of Miniature Inhabitants

Against a tasty backdrop of pastries, fruit, and vegetables, photographers Pierre Javelle and Akiko Ida have created a series of humorous dioramas that depict miniature people going about their daily lives in an edible world. Titled MINIMIAM, a play on words that marries miniature and “yummy” (miam in French), the project has been ongoing since 2002 and was inspired by the married couple’s profession as commercial food photographers. “We’re both food photographer in our daily work, and we’re both quite crazy about cooking, eating and everything about food,” says Ida. “So when we started this small people series, naturally we created the stories related to the food.”

The figures acquired for each photograph are taken from train model sets which are generally 1/87 scale, the perfect size for exploring lands of donuts or a frothy mix of meringue turned into a winter sledding adventure. The body of work has now grown to include some 60 sets of diptychs, and the pair is also creating large scale installations that more directly connect the model train world with sprawling food dioramas. Edible Chocolate Art Supplies by Nendo

If you ever had an overwhelming desire to eat paste or paint chips as a child, this might be for you. Created by design firm Nendo (previously) for the Seibu Department Store in Japan these 12-piece paint sets are completely edible, paint tubes and all. Instead of paint, each tube contains a different flavored caramel or syrup matching the color of its label from green tea to strawberry to honey. Recently completed for display at Dylan’s Candy Bar during Art Basel Miami, these towering architectural creations of the world’s most famous art museums and galleries were created with gingerbread and candy by food artists Caitlin Levin and Henry Hargreaves. An array of hard candy windows forms the iconic pyramid extension at the Louvre, while icing and gingerbread form the smooth curves of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Some of the iconic structures are so immaculately detailed that once photographed in black and white they almost look like the real thing. You can see more behind the scenes photos here.

Earlier this summer Austin-based photographer Emily Blincoe created this comprehensive series of various candy organized by color called her Sugar Series. Such a great mix of common and nostalgic sweets. And … white underpants on a stick. A Rotating Disco Ball Pizza Oven by Lukas Galehr

Designed by Austrian architect Lukas Galehr for the recently-opened ‘Disco Volante’ pizzeria in Vienna, this fully-functional pizza oven has been designed to look like a gigantic reflective disco ball. And yes, it even rotates. Via Madame Mohr:

According to the clients wish the restaurant should not only carry the atmosphere of a southern Italian pizzeria but also transport the lightness of the “Italo-Disco” era of the 1970s and 80s.

The heart of every pizzeria is the wood fired oven which in this case is a giant disco ball with a rotating mechanism. After the dough is run out the Pizzaioli start the engine and the oven begins to slowly turn with about 1 revolution per minute.

Food Sculptures Made with Fruits and Vegetables by Dan Cretu

Romania-based photographer Dan Cretu creates all sorts of fun everyday objects like cameras, radios, and bicycles using cut fruit and vegetables. Cretu says the pieces aren’t digitally altered and that due to the organic nature of the medium, each piece has to be constructed and photographed in less than four hours.
