Polybius: Music Made with Old Technology

As he sits at the bottom of a dry swimming pool, musician Julian Corrie is joined by an orchestra of outmoded technology in this brief new music video titled Polybius, directed by James Houston and produced by Bold Yin. In place of drums or other instruments, Houston instead used a SEGA Mega Drive, a Commodore 64, several floppy disk drives and old hard drives to create the accompaniment. The artist refers to the track as a “nostalgic farewell to forgotten friends,” and although it ends a bit abruptly, I found it to be unexpectedly lovely.

You might remember a similar piece by Houston from almost five years ago when he created a killer cover of Radiohead’s “Nude” using a similar approach. Not to be outdone, PURETUNE also covered House of the Rising Sun using a wide variety of legacy computer equipment. (via The Fox is Black)

Musician James Hill Converts a Ukulele into an Entirely New Instrument

Armed with a pair of humble wooden chopsticks, a .74 cent plastic comb, and a few other minor modifications, Canadian musician James Hill can convert his ukulele into a ridiculous beat machine. Hill mimics a wide range of rhythmic genres from techno to hip hop in this brief clip shot at a sold-out 2011 show at Don Quixote’s International Music Hall in Felton, California. There’s a lot of build-up and preparation, the music starts around 3:45. (via Devour)

Night Stroll: Geometric Lightscapes Animated on the Streets of Tokyo by Tao Tajima

Night Stroll is a lovely animated short by Tao Tajima. Various light figures are seen interacting with locations around Tokyo, I can’t begin to guess how this was all planned, shot and animated and there is almost no information about it online, but it’s remarkable nonetheless.

Beatbox Brilliance: Tom Thum at TEDxSydney

At about two minutes in to this ten minute performance by beat boxer Tom Thum my jaw was already hanging open, by about six minutes I had nearly thrown my computer off my lap. The Guardian was absolutely correct when it stated Thum “appears to have swallowed an entire orchestra and several backing singers”. The performance was shot at TEDxSydney last May in the famous Sydney Opera House and was just released online yesterday. Excuse me while I step outside to show this to random people on the street.

Animated Music Video Filmed Through a Band’s Breath in Freezing Temperatures by Wriggles & Robins

Innovative directing duo Matt Robinson and Tom Wrigglesworth of Wriggles & Robins (previously) just released this great new music video for the band Travis. The team shot at below freezing temperatures and filmed projected animations that could only be seen when the four band members would breath through the cold air. Although subtle, there are some amazing sequences that really make this worth watching all the way through. You might remember Wriggles & Robins’s life drawing video from a few months ago.

Stop Motion Wire and Paper Music Video by Patator Prod

There are some fantastic sequences in this brief stop motion clip by Victor Haegelin of Patator Prod accompanied by music from Professor Kliq. Haegelin relies entirely on bent wire and paper to create everything you see and it’s amazing how fluid all the individual wire strands become when animated like this, wish it went a bit longer.
