Artist Agnes Hansella joins Colossal for a workshop on macramé. During our hour-long session, Hansella will teach techniques for crafting the miniature piece shown above using the larks head knot, alternating half hitch, square knot, wrap knot, and diamond stitch. She will also share tips for utilizing the same methods to create a larger-scale work.

Hansella will join us live from Jakarta for this hybrid workshop utilizing partially pre-recorded instruction.

Agnes Hansella is a self-taught textile artist focusing on macramé. She was born in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, to a Christian Dayak father and an Indonesian Chinese mother. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the Jakarta Institute of Arts for Film and TV majoring in audio production.

In 2017, Hansella realized it was time to move to a different art form and sync herself naturally with ropes and knotting. She loves the technique because it’s simple and doesn’t require any tools. Her work spans from small wall hanging to building-sized knotting, and her most notable piece is a three-part installation that reflects the natural surroundings of the seaside structure in Jimbaran, Bali, Indonesia. Each knotted piece spans more than 37 feet wide and is made by knotting a 16-millimeter manila rope. The artist is currently focusing her work on 3D macramé.
