Modular Paper Cubes by Origami Artist Jo Nakashima Shape-Shift in Seemingly Infinite Combinations

July 2, 2019

Laura Staugaitis

Brazil-based origami artist Jo Nakashima (previously) continues to create seemingly impossible kinetic origami out of modular cubes. Each interconnected box is individually folded and then strategically incorporated into the larger unit to create a moveable structure that shape-shifts in the user’s hands. The 9-unit design shown below is based on the “Pandora’s Box” by Yami Yamauchi, and Nakashima describes the difficulty level as “easy”. See more of Nakashima’s creations, including frequent step-by-step tutorials, on YouTube and Instagram. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAt8nclL7yQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RRjmsBAreA   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Jo Nakashima (@jonakashima) on Jun 23, 2019 at 5:49am PDT…

The Line Between Reality and Animation Blurs in a Motion Capture Music Video for Ed Sheeran

June 26, 2019

Laura Staugaitis

https://vimeo.com/344202627 Pop singer Ed Sheeran flaunts his star power in an incredibly complex music video that combines motion capture, computer generated extras, and a guest appearance by Chance the Rapper to boot. The colorful video for “Cross Me” starts off with a professional dancer, Courtney Scarr, in a motion capture suit. Scarr becomes the sole real-life character in the video revisited throughout the song. Teeming animations of human figures, light effects, and a shower of sprinkles fill a dance hall, outdoor track, baseball field, and video game. Sheeran and Chance both appear as animated versions of themselves, navigating these computer-generated…

…Mexico and has spent 14 years living in the U.S., both as a child and as an adult. However, he re-rooted himself in Tijuana’s vibrant arts scene ten years ago. In an interview with Hyperallergic Chiu explained, “the murals spread messages of peace to people crossing the border by car or on foot,” and are “intended to be a final glimpse of hope for migrants risking danger as they cross northward.” A recently released documentary by Alejandro Arguelles Benitez follows the project. An Enchanting Macro Time-Lapse of Blooms and Insects in 8K Resolution by Thomas Blanchard

June 26, 2019

Laura Staugaitis

https://vimeo.com/343068761 In -N- Uprising, a video that is equal parts stylized and naturalistic, Thomas Blanchard (previously) documents the life cycles of insects and flowers. Time-lapse allows the viewer to see a caterpillar metamorphose into a chrysalis and then a butterfly, orchid buds burst into full bloom, and a snail grow its eyeballs perched on antennae. By using solid fields of color as his background, Blanchard allows the focus to stay on the impressive transformative moments. The insects were filmed in video at 8K shot over the course of seven months, and the flower blooms are assembled from hundreds of 5K…

…any particular source plant or natural object. “When conceiving my pieces I center on a hidden narrative and begin to assign visual elements that aline with the concept of the piece, often utilizing ornate structures and simple construction methods to further highlight my interests in foundation and form,” Curran explains on his website. “In the process of creating I look for patterns in nature and symmetry in ecosystems. I look for how innovation shapes itself into our ever expanding systems of complexity and knowledge.” You can see more of Curran’s kinetic sculptures in motion on Instagram and Vimeo. https://vimeo.com/341918837 https://vimeo.com/309126873…

…“chill” are slowly hand drawn in colorful inks which slowly change their hue and increase in sparkle as they dry on the page. Lester studied graphic design at Central Saint Martins in London and now works in East Sussex as an artist and graphic designer. The calligrapher has amassed a large online following for his daily twists on the ancient form, which you can follow on Facebook and Instagram. Make sure to watch with the sound on, as the scratching of the pen nib on paper is just as engaging as his shimmering strokes.
