February 12, 2015

Johnny Waldman

…of 1000 frames/second. Once it’s put to slow motion, what happened in 5 seconds unfolds into a 3.5-minute “dreamlike mural.” There were some digital elements later added in the editing room but for the most part this is a single, 5-second shot. It was put to the song “Unconditional Rebel” by French musician Siska. (via PetaPixel)…

A Perpetual Whirlpool of Black Water Installed in a Gallery Floor by Anish Kapoor

February 10, 2015

Johnny Waldman

…it, a vortex of black water perpetually froths and churns. The whirlpool alters the form, or skin, of the water creating a fury of liquid that invades the walls of the gallery. Descension was on view in a corner room at the Aspinwall House in Fort Kochi, a meaningful location because the room opens to views of a peaceful sea that creates a striking contrast to the powerful whirling vortex. …ut the installation: Fungus is an agent of change. I’m fascinated with its myriad forms, and I love to go in search of it. I can become more excited by discovering a beautiful fungal growth than by perusing artwork ‘discovered’ for us by curators in contemporary museums. You can see much more of Kazanjian’s work on his website, and at Jenn…

…sitor was more significant than writer Stephen King, whose stay at the 140-room neo-Georgian hotel inspired him to write The Shining. While the movie adaptation wasn’t filmed at the Stanley, that hasn’t stopped the hotel from embracing their share of fame in association with the legendary book and 1980 horror film. Now the Stanley plans to build a 61,500 square foot hedge maze, similar to the backdrop of the heart-pounding final moments in Kubrick…

Cut Paper Illustrations by Maude White

December 27, 2014

Christopher Jobson

…Maude White (previously) continues to create beautifully rendered illustrations with cut paper, creating dozens of new pieces since we explored her work this summer. White relies heavily on thin lines and negative space to create each illustration, a subtractive process with no room for error; a single bad cut could be fatal to a piece. Her latest series titled What’s Left on the Farm involves portraits of women with objects in their hair. White c…
