Mona Caron's Murals of Weeds Slowly Overtake Walls and Buildings

December 11, 2014

Christopher Jobson

As part of her ongoing Weeds project, artist Mona Caron (previously) has begun photographing the progress of her murals step-by-step, creating short animations of growing plants in public spaces. Caron has recently painted murals of weeds in her native Switzerland, India, and around her current home in San Francisco in what she describes as “a tribute to the resilience of all those beings who no one made room for, were not part of the plan, and yet keep coming back, pushing through and rising up.” Definitely watch the video above to see more of these plants coming to life, and…

Artist Carol Milne Knits with Glass

October 15, 2014

Christopher Jobson

…high temperatures. Next, hot steam is used to melt the wax, leaving behind an empty cavity in the shape of the artwork. Pieces of room temperature glass are then placed inside the mold which is then heated to 1,400-1,600 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the type of glass. Afterward, the piece is slowly cooled over a period of several weeks, followed by a careful excavation process, where Milne delicately chips away like an archaeologist to reveal the final piece. You can see much more of Milne’s work at the Glass Art Society, on Facebook, and in her online gallery. (via Lustik)…

Christopher Jobson

https://vimeo.com/104945861 This independent film project from filmmaker Hiroshi Kondo starts as a fairly typical time-lapse journey through highways surrounding Tokyo, but quickly morphs into something entirely different. A Trio of Dreamy Treehouses Linked by Bridges

August 15, 2014

Christopher Jobson

All photos © Lindsay Appel for My Cool Shed Architect and environmentalist Peter Bahouth designed and built this beautiful trio of treehouses linked by bridges in an Atlanta forest, which also happens to be his backyard. Inspired by the treehouses and adventures of his youth, the idea was to create a sort of fort for grown-ups. The three houses dubbed “Mind,” “Body,” and “Spirit,” include a living room and bedroom with a special bed that slides out for an improved view of the forest below. The photos here were taken for Jane Field-Lewis’ book My Cool Shed, provided courtesy photographer…

Haunting Photos of the German Countryside Reveal Scars Left from WWII Bombs

July 22, 2014

Johnny Waldman

Henning Rogge, “#45 (Bulau)” (2013), Analogue C-print, 24 x 29 1/8 inches (all photographs courtesy the artist and RH Contemporary Art) Although WWII ended almost 70 years ago, its legacy lives on: in photographs, memories and on our landscape. Walk through the forests of Germany and you’ll see craters or, scars, as German photographer Henning Rogge calls them, that are the aftermath of bombs being dropped from planes. Rogge has been tracking down these craters and photographing them, capturing moments, after decades have elapsed, of earth slowly healing her wounds. An unknowing hiker might easily mistake them for small ponds…

Inventor Spends Five Years Trying to Determine if Vermeer's Paintings Are 350-year-old Color Photos

June 11, 2014

Christopher Jobson

…Jenison embarked on an experiment to recreate one of Vermeer’s most famous paintings, The Music Lesson. It’s an obsession that would consume five years of his life involving the actual construction of the entire room seen in the painting down to the most minute details, the (re)invention of a 17-century optical technology using period-appropriate tools and materials, and then seven months spent painting. The entire endeavor was filmed and turned into a documentary titled Tim’s Vermeer, the trailer of which you can see above. The film began its theatrical run in January, but just became available as a Blu-ray combo…
