Artist Rachel Sussman Photographs the Oldest Living Things in the World before They Vanish

…encroachment. Sussman’s photographs have now been gathered together for the first time in The Oldest Living Things in the World, a new book published by the University of Chicago Press. Sitting at the intersection of art, science, and travelogue, the book details her adventures in tracking down each subject and relays the valuable scientific work done by scientists to understand them. It includes 124 photographs, 30 essays, infographics and forewords by Hans-Ulrich Obrist and Carl Zimmer. You can learn more about Sussman’s project in her 2010 TED Talk. Life and Death Animated through the Four Seasons in New Music Video for Chet Faker

In this superbly shot stop-motion music video for Chet Faker’s latest single Talk is Cheap, creative directors Toby and Pete create a striking visual of the four seasons. Disarm: A Mechanized Orchestra of Instruments Built from Decommissioned Weapons

…the musical devices that are controlled by computers and can be pre-programmed to play music. In the video above the Creator’s Project recently sat down with Reyes to learn more about how he “transforms negative instincts into creative instincts.” It’s well worth a watch to see the instruments in use. You can see more photos of Disarm over at Lisson Gallery in London where it debuted earlier this year. Additionally, many of the Disarm instruments will be at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh starting October 5, 2013 and the artist is also giving a talk on October 1st….

The Geometric Artwork of Andy Gilmore

Rochester-based artist Andy Gilmore turns math into art, creating hypnotizing and kaledscopic patterns that are heavily influenced by patterns he encounters in nature as well as music. The prolific artist has numerous commercial clients including Wired, Nike, and the New York Times, but has also released his own visual compositions through Ghostly International Editions since 2010. Leandro Erlich's Reflective Optical Illusion House Now in London

…giant mirrors propped against a huge horizontal print of a Victorian terraced house, visitors are free to climb and jump around as their reflections appear to move freely without the pesky effects of gravity. Titled Dalston House the piece was erected in Hackney just off Dalston Junction on a disused lot that has remained vacant since it was bombed during the Second World War. The installation opens today and is free to all visitors and will remain up through August 4th. Erlich will also be giving a talk tomorrow starting at 7:30pm. All images courtesy the Barbican.
