Remarkable Hobo Nickels Carved from Clad Coins by Paolo Curcio

December 27, 2013

Christopher Jobson

About two years we featured a great selection of skull nickels, a numismatic curiosity where miniature bas relief sculptures are carved into coins, an artform that’s broadly referred to as hobo nickel art. While researching a follow-up article on Hobonickelart.com I stumbled onto the work of Paolo Curcio (aka “mrthe”) who appears to have taken the process of carving coins to an entirely new level. Using a variety of different…

October 1, 2013

Christopher Jobson

Banksy’s website updated a few minutes ago to announce Better Out Than In, “an artists residency on the streets of New York.” The ongoing event is accompanied by a phone number (800) 656-4271 that you can call with a specific code correlating to each artwork. The current recording for #1, shown above, involves a satirical message that completely skewers typical audio tours found in museums and galleries and pokes fun of the…

The team tagged hundreds of live snails with an array of LEDs and UV paint and then tracked their speed and patterns of movement at night. Apparently lungworm infections are…

Christopher Jobson

Ten years ago Chicago artist and designer Matthew Hoffman decided to print a batch of 100 stickers that read simply “You Are Beautiful” which he gave to friends and colleagues who found the phrase to be inspiring, hopeful, and infectious. Requests for the stickers began to trickle in so Hoffman started selling them in small batches online at You-Are-Beautiful.com. Demand quickly began to swell, so much so that he’s now…

Can You Find the Dog in Each of these Photos? Meet Momo, the Most Elusive Puppy on Instagram

January 16, 2013

Christopher Jobson

Ontario-based graphic designer Andrew Knapp noticed that his 4.5 year old border collie, Momo, would always hide when fetching sticks instead of dutifully returning them. After photographing a few of the shots Knapp hatched an idea for a series of urban and rural landscapes with the dog hiding somewhere in the frame. He’s a well-camouflaged pup, definitely the ‘Where’s Waldo’ of the internet. You can follow Momo’s…

New Figurative Sculptures Made of Shattered Glass by Daniel Arsham

November 6, 2012

Christopher Jobson

New York based artist Daniel Arsham (previously here, here and here) recently completed a number of new works, most notably these three figurative sculptures made from compacted broken glass, inspired by the discovery of glass shards in his home after hurricane Andrew in 1992. Other new sculptures include several picture frames using the same broken glass treatment and cameras formed from sand and stone. Arsham’s work is almost…
