Vertical Emptiness: Crystallized Tree Branches Dripping with Strands of Hot Glue by Yasuaki Onishi

September 23, 2013

Christopher Jobson

Known for his ethereal and seemingly weightless installations of plastic membranes suspended in midair by black hot glue, Japanese artist Yasuaki Onishi embarked on a slightly different approach with his latest work, Vertical Emptiness. Currently on view at the Kyoto Art Center, the piece is made from upside down tree branches from which is draped a delicate framework of hot glue and crystallized urea compounds. The result is a sort of frozen snowfall that connects the gallery floor and ceiling. You can see the piece in much more detail in the video above by Kuroyanagi Takashi. (via Spoon and Tamago)

October 10, 2014

Christopher Jobson

Using nothing but wire, sculptor Clive Madison creates tangled trees that grow from wooden bases into dense clusters of leaves and branches. Each piece is made by hand without glue or solder, using single strands of wire that start at the base and terminate at the top. You can see many more pieces on his website, and several are available through Lee Champman Gallery. (via Ghost in the Machine)

Highlights from Sculpture by the Sea 2013 in Aarhus, Denmark

June 10, 2013

Christopher Jobson

Last week marked the opening of Sculpture by the Sea in Aarhus, Denmark including sculptural artworks from 64 artists hailing from 22 countries around the world. Above are some of my favorite works currently on view, including the jaw-dropping sculpture Once by James Dive of the Glue Society (previously) who managed to compress an entire mobile amusement park into a 4x4 meter cube, rides, games, prizes and all. Worst. Carnival. Ever. Also of note is Alejandro Propato's Permanent Sunrise, a colorful thread installation that visually aligns with the actual location of…

The Glue Society Imagines an Art Movement Centered on Excess Called “Moreing”

September 6, 2013

Christopher Jobson

In this video from the Glue Society (previously here and here) we learn about a new art movement focused on possessing multiples of the same object. This had me smiling all the way through. The clip was made as a promotional effort for Boost chocolate bars, but stands up surprisingly well on its own. Happy Friday.

Artist Elsa Mora recently updated her portfolio with a number of beautiful paper sculptures created for both private clients and exhibition. All of Mora's pieces are created with little more than acid-free paper and glue which is carefully cut, layered, and assembled to create 2D and 3D images. Several of the pieces are currently at the Racine Art Museum in Wisconsin for a show titled Once Upon A Time: Fairy Tales, Fantasy, and Contemporary Art that runs through August 31. You can see more on her website. (via Brown Paper Bag)

Imaginative Industrial Flying Machines Made From Cardboard by Daniel Agdag

August 8, 2014

Johnny Waldman

If you want to create detailed and imaginative flying machine sculptures that look like they’re about to take flight, cardboard is hardly the material to use. Unless of course you’re artist Daniel Agdag (previously), who has been toiling away creating a series of new works each more detailed and fascinating than the next. "The Principles of Aerodynamics" is Agdag’s first solo exhibition where his series of cardboard contraptions that portray his “ongoing pursuit of escape through the metaphor of flight” will be on display through Aug 31, 2014. As he’s done in the past, Agdag forfeits all blueprints, drawings and…
