Tiny Street Murals by ‘Jaune’ Unveil a World of Miniature City Workers

Belgian stencil artist Jonathan Pauwels, or "Jaune," creates urban interventions in his hometown of Brussels, Belgium, stenciling tiny sanitation workers on pipes, door frames, and brick walls. His small-scale installations give a peek into the world of the miniature workers, one where they engage in amusing activities that seem to cause more disorder than good. "Despite performing an important public service in garish fluorescent clothing, I observed that [sanitation workers] exist in the background of our urban environment, becoming almost invisible to the average person," says Jaune about the series in an artist statement on his website. "It was in 2011 that I…

These Absurdly Contorted Animals by Bruno Pontiroli Will Leave You With a Backache

The troupe of wild animals in Bruno Pontiroli’s paintings contort their bodies into backbends and handstands that would rival even the most accomplished gymnast. A wrinkly hippo balances on its tongue, a tiger arches its torso into a 90-degree angle, and a hyena rotates its hind legs in the air. The French artist (previously) notes that he begins the bizarre artworks with easily-recognized animals that he then shapes "like the way a child plays with modeling clay or a…

Miniature Scenes by Slinkachu Comment on Consumer Culture

For the last 13 years, guerrilla miniaturist Slinkachu (previously) has been creating barely noticeable scenes to be discovered by unsuspecting passersby. The London-based artist uses tiny model people whose minuscule size creates humorous and thought-provoking scenarios. Slinkachu often comments on current events and social dynamics in his work. An installation at the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent features a purse placed nonchalantly on a gallery bench, which turns out to be a meta-gallery. Inside the purse, small figures admire glorified tokens of consumer consumer culture like framed credit cards and lipstick sculptures. Slinkachu's…
