Lego Bonsai Tree by Azuma Makoto

Botanical artist Azuma Makoto (previously here and here) just completed work on this lovely bonsai tree made entirely from LEGO bricks. The excruciating detail from the undulating moss surface to the craggy, multicolored tree branches is clear evidence of Makoto’s intimate understanding of the botanical world. If I encountered an actual set like this you couldn’t take my money fast enough. See a bit more detail here. (via spoon and tamago)

Collapsible Leaves: Plant Sculptures by Azuma Makoto

Artist and designer Azuma Makoto (previously here and here) was born in 1976 and runs a haute couture flower shop called JARDINS des FLEURS in Moto-Azabu, Tokyo. His work with plants and flowers also extends into personal artistic practice and client work where he creates a wide variety of sculptures, installations and objects using tress, leaves, moss, and other plants both organic and artificial. One of his most recent exhibitions, Collapsible Leaves at Eye of Gyre Gallery involved a remarkable collection of suspended and mounted sculptures made of tightly folded and layered leaves. The pieces are unique in that I imagine they must have required rapid assembly a single leaf at a time, and yet look as if they are naturally occurring objects.
