Bodies Flip, Dance, and Stack in Gravity-Defying Images by Rob Woodcox

February 1, 2019

Kate Sierzputowski

Fine art and fashion photographer Rob Woodcox works with dancers to create striking images of human bodies pushed past their physical threshold with a bit of creative editing. Impossible feats of the body are achieved in his photography, such as an image of subjects curved in both convex and concave positions while suspended in the air, and another of bodies stacked meticulously in a sort of Tetris-style configuration. You can view more of Woodcox’s creative presentations of the human form on Instagram, and buy select prints of his work on his website. (via Visual Fodder)

Modified Office Chairs Perform an Autonomous Dance Through Gagosian Gallery

September 11, 2018

Kate Sierzputowski

Nine office chairs, each in a dazzling jewel tone, swirl and scuttle across the reflective floor of Gagosian‘s West 21st Street gallery. PLAY was conceived by Swiss artist Urs Fischer (previously) with choreography for the inanimate objects provided by New York City-based artist Madeline Hollander. The self-propelled furniture is controlled by programming and sensors embedded in their seats which moves them away from visitors or towards each other while swirling through the extensive space. When the performative chairs are running low on battery, they are programmed to head to a machine located inside the gallery that automatically replaces their seats.

Visitors may walk through the herd of functional chairs, observing the pieces as they group together, move in synchronized turns, or scatter. You can interact with the objects yourself during PLAY’s run at Gagosian through October 13, 2018. (via Artsy)

Dancing in Movies: A Foot-Tapping Montage of Cinema Scenes

June 19, 2018

Laura Staugaitis

Despite the incredibly vast array of mood and subject matter of films throughout the ages, dancing is a universal dramatic device used to create moments of levity, romance, and drama. Casper Langbak of CLS videos created a delightful super-edit of nearly 300 dance scenes in movies ranging from La La Land to Schindler’s List. You can see a full list of the clips here. Langbak has a large catalogue of cinematic collections and tributes, like Meet the Hero, on YouTube.

OK Go’s Latest Music Video Features Hundreds of Umbrella-Wielding Dancers

October 27, 2014

Christopher Jobson

Only four months after their music video for the “The Writing’s on the Wall” filled with optical illusions, OK Go are back with yet another meticulously choreographed dance video for “I Won’t Let You Down.” Filmed in Japan, this new clip features more than a few umbrellas, Honda UNI-CUB personal vehicles (a kind of tiny robo scooter), and a cast of hundreds. Make sure to stick around for the final shot, hard to believe it’s even real, but knowing OK Go, it certainly is.
