A Woolen Ape Explores a Backyard Garden in a New Short from Marc & Emma
As part of a promotional campaign for Wonderlijk Wild (Miraculously Wild), an effort to encourage home gardening in Belgium, filmmaking duo Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels of Marc & Emma were hired to create this wonderful short about a felted green ape exploring the outdoors. You might remember their work from this other woolen animation featuring two doughy wrestlers for the National Animation Festival last year.

The Felted Specimens of Hine Mizushima
The list of talents attached to Vancouver-based artist Hine Mizushima's name includes stop-motion puppet animator, illustrator, needle felter, toy designer, and sculptor. Her colorful hand-stitched squids, octopi, mushrooms, and medical specimens that might otherwise be described as creepy or crawly are instead infused with ample doses of fluffy and fuzzy. Mizushima exhibited most recently at FOE Gallery and many of her original felt pieces are available over on Etsy.

Artist Stocks the Shelves of a London Corner Store with 4,000 Hand-Stitched Felt Products
British artist Lucy Sparrow has converted an entire abandoned corner shop in Bethnal Green, east London, into a temporary art exhibition titled The Corner Shop featuring 4,000 hand-sewn felt products. Chips, magazines, candy, frozen dinners, and even the cash register have been faithfully rendered in fabric, a process that took Sparrow about seven months to complete and began with a successful plea for help on Kickstarter. The shop is open to visitors every day this month, and almost all of the items are available for purchase online. (via My Modern Met, Laughing Squid, The Jealous Curator)

Stop Motion Woolen Puppets Wrestle the Stuffing Out of Each Other
I love everything about these portly characters beating the stuffing out of each other in this animated short from Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels. Titled Fight!, the stop motion project was selected as the trailer for the National Animation Festival 2013 in Bruz, France. If you liked this also check out a preview for another short, Oh Willy. Red Hot Wooly Magma
These photographs that appear to capture red-hot cracks in the Earth’s surface weren’t taken in Hawaii or Indonesia, but rather in the studio of artist Eszter Burghardt who uses wool and colored lights to create miniature natural landscapes including volcanoes, glaciers, fjords and rivers. See many more of her Wooly Sagas and a similar project using food: Edible Vistas.
