Amazing

Northern White-faced Owl Assists Illustrator Using Tablet

June 10, 2014

Christopher Jobson

Apropos of nothing, here’s a quick video of a Japanese illustrator who goes by the name Satsuma, working with a Northern white-faced owl perched on his hand. The clip is humourous in and of itself, but it’s especially fascinating to see the stabilization of the bird’s head and eyes while he works. Strangely mesmerizing. (via Tastefully Offensive)

May 27, 2014

New York photographer Sophie Gamand has spent the last four years photographing dogs as part of a larger project to better understand humans. Her latest series, Wet Dog, captures hilarious and awkward photos of small dogs as they are bathed with the help of professional groomer Ruben Santana in the Bronx. Fascinated by the domestication of dogs as one of the first forms of artificial selection, Gamand explores the differences and similarities in animals and humans, making the the distinction that dogs ceased being “animals” long ago as they acquired human attributes and became pets.

The Wet Dog series won first place in the Portraiture category of the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards, and the photos you see here will be included in a book to be published by Grand Central Publishing in the fall of 2015. Prints are available here, and you can also follow Gamand on Instagram. All images courtesy the photographer. (via Feature Shoot)

Animator Marty Cooper creates brief animated shorts by blending traditional cel animation with photos he takes with his iPhone 5. By using transparent layers he’s able to create characters that interact with other objects in the background and foreground in a method similar to stop motion. Above is a three minute collection titled Aug(De)Mented Reality, and you can also see more on his Tumblr.

Calamityware: Disastrous Scenarios on Traditional Blue Porcelain Dinner Plates

May 11, 2014

For centuries artisans have been crafting white porcelain dishes and decorating them with intricate cobalt blue patterns, from floral designs to swirling landscapes. Enter graphic designer Don Moyer who is turning the tradition on its head with his wildly successful line of Calamityware dinner plates. Moyer expertly mimics several Eastern motifs in his plates with one major addition: flying monkeys, a UFO assault, and giant gurgling sea monsters.

Two plates have already been created and are available in his shop, while a third is currently doing quite well over on Kickstarter. He says next up is a bonafide pirate invasion plate which you can keep an eye out for (ba dum!) later this year.

Photographer Romain Laurent (previously here and here) continues to create a new looping animated portrait each week. The photographer began the project as a way to break free from the pressure of commercial work, and we’re glad to see the project is still ongoing. These are some of the best portraits since the new year, but you can see lots more on his Tumblr.

Three Hyper Island students (Caio Andrade, Rafael Ochoa, and Linn Livijn Wexell) dreamed up the idea of making “Not Available on the App Store” stickers as a friendly reminder to get kids away from the screen and into the real world. Stickers are available for purchase or you can make your own. Purchased!
