Art

Shannon Rankin

January 14, 2011

Christopher Jobson

Born in California artist Shannon Rankin lives and works in Maine.

In my work I create installations, collages and drawings that use the language of maps to explore the connections among geological and biological processes, patterns in nature, geometry and anatomy. Using a variety of distinct styles I intricately cut, score, wrinkle, layer, fold, paint and pin maps to produce revised versions that often become more like the terrains they represent.

The Luminous Earth Grid

January 11, 2011

Christopher Jobson

The Luminous Earth Grid was a 1993 installation by artist Stuart Williams erected 50 miles north of San Francisco.

Luminous Earth Grid, an array of 1,680 energy-efficient fluorescent lamps, swept over 10 acres of undulating landscape, 50 miles north of San Francisco. Said the artist, “I see the project as a poetic statement on the potential harmony between technology and nature.” Over a five year period, Williams launched a rigorous fund raising campaign throughout Northern California, and raised nearly half a million dollars to realize the massive project. It was widely acclaimed by critics around the globe and drew tens of thousands of visitors.

I would have loved to see this firsthand. (via behance)

Pixel Pour 2.0 as seen on Mercer Street in New York City. Possibly the work of Kelly Goeller who created another Pixel Pour in 2008. (via laughing squid)

Work from Stockholm-based artist Anders Krisár. I especially enjoy the last piece, a bronze cast attached to a heat isolator in close proximity to another cast made of beeswax. Pretty incredible. (via designspiration)

The Woodwork of Ben Butler

January 3, 2011

Christopher Jobson

If you’re in Chicago, artist Ben Butler will have work at Zg Gallery as part of a show that opens this Friday, January 7th. I find his sculpture to be almost hypnotic, as if the pieces themselves are the visualization of rhythm or sound. Very cool stuff.

Art

Myeombeom Kim

January 3, 2011

Christopher Jobson

Myeombeom Kim could be my new favorite artist. Blending nature with man-made objects Kim explores the philosophical idea of hylozoism, that all or some material things possess life, or that all life is inseparable from matter. The images above are just a small handful of pieces from a much larger body of work and I urge you to poke around her site. (via who killed bambi)
