Open Calls

New Futures at The Other Art Fair Chicago Featured
As part of The Other Art Fair’s mission to break down traditional barriers of the contemporary art world, New Futures is designed to launch the careers of talented emerging artists through a prize that includes free exhibition space at this fall’s fair and mentorship. Selected artists will have the opportunity to exhibit physically at the Chicago fair and digitally through Virtual Editions. New Futures Chicago is presented in partnership with Colossal.
Deadline: July 19, 2021.

Booooooom’s New Art Book Quiet
Booooooom announced an open call for its next art book centered around a theme of quiet, or “images provides a little escape from the blaring sounds and the busyness of daily life.” It’s open to drawings and digital and traditional paintings.
Deadline: July 9, 2021.

Public ARTery at the Garment District NYC
The Garment District NYC is looking for a local artist to transform the Port Authority Midtown Bus Terminal into a large-scale mural. Positioned on 40th Street between 8th and 9th avenues, the chosen work will be installed at the world’s busiest terminal this fall.
Deadline: July 15, 2021.

7th Annual National Juried Exhibition at Oxford Arts Alliance
Oxford Arts Alliance is hosting its 7th Annual National Juried Exhibition this October with $700 in prize money for the winning entrant. Juried by Charles Goolsby, professor of art at Emory & Henry College and chair of the Division of Visual and Performing Arts, the exhibition has no theme, and the entry fee is $15.
Deadline: August 27, 2021.

 

Residencies & Grants

The Neon Museum National Artist Residency
Applications are open for The Neon Museum’s 2021 residency, which will run from October 25 to December 5, 2021, and award one artist a $2,500 honorarium, in addition to providing travel, lodging, and materials. Whether working in digital, performance, or visual arts, the resident will develop a project inspired by the museum’s collection. Neon production is not a prerequisite.
Deadline: July 11, 2021.

Oak Spring Garden’s Botanical Artist-in-Residence
Oak Spring Garden is hosting its third annual botanical artist residency, which will run between two and four weeks during the period of March 27—May 7, 2022. It’s open to artists who create scientifically accurate depictions of plants in watercolor, pencil, pen and ink, colored pencil, mixed media, oil, acrylic, gouache, egg tempera, and original prints.
Deadline: July 15, 2021.

#BlackDesignVisionaries Aspiring Designer & Small Business Grants
To support the global Black design community, the inaugural #BlackDesignVisionaries program, which is presented by Instagram’s @design and the Brooklyn Museum, will award three $10,000 grants to aspiring Black designers between the ages of 18 and 30, as well as one $100,000 grant to a small, Black-led design business no more than 10 years into its practice.
Deadline: July 16, 2021.

The Ginkgo Creative Residency
This three-month residency brings artists working in fiction, poetry, sound, coding, linguistics, anthropology, philosophy, and visual art and design to Gingko to pursue projects at the intersection of creativity and synthetic biology. It’s open to international applicants and awards residents a $5,000/month stipend.
Deadline: July 18, 2021.

Creative Futures Grant
Led by the Black Artists and Designers Guild, the Creative Futures Grant will award $5,000 each to four recipients working in visual arts, furniture, lighting, textiles, interior design, and architecture. It’s open to Black third- and fourth-year undergraduate and graduate students at U.S. institutions.
Deadline: July 26, 2021.

The Other Art Fair Featured
The Other Art Fair presented by Saatchi Art is tailor-made to support independent artists. Each fair attracts thousands of art lovers looking to buy directly from a curated collection of artists, whether as first-time buyers or seasoned collectors. Free applications are now open for Los Angeles, Chicago, and Sydney, with other locations opening soon.

Hot Summer City: Street Photography Exhibition
Vestige Concept Gallery is hosting an open call for street photography that captures the essence of summer in the city. Whether focused on late nights and outdoor fun or the more insidious effects of the season like oppressive heat, the work should capture the intensity and multifaceted nature of that time of year. Hot Summer City will be guest curated by Rafael Fuchs and is open to international photographers. There’s a $25 entry fee.
Deadline: June 20, 2021.

Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair
The Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair is looking for artworks that explore the breadth of contemporary print. Using a hybrid model this year, the fair will be in person at Royal Arsenal Woolwich from November 11 to 14 and will run online until November 28. Part of its goal is to position emerging artists alongside those who are established in the medium, including Yinka Shonibare, David Shrigley, Tracey Emin, and David Hockney. The application fee is £25.

SPRING/BREAK Art Show 2021
The SPRING/BREAK Art Show is seeking independent curators, galleries, and nonprofits for its fall 2021 exhibition in New York City. Titled HEARSAY: HERESY, the central theme involves rumors, misinterpretations, and conceptual betrayal of the norms, in addition to works inspired by the physical trades of Medieval tradition. There’s an application fee of $100.
Deadline: July 1, 2021.

7th Annual National Juried Exhibition at Oxford Arts Alliance
Oxford Arts Alliance is hosting its 7th Annual National Juried Exhibition this October with $700 in prize money for the winning entrant. Artist Relief Grants
To support those affected by the COVID-19 crisis, Artist Relief is an emergency initiative offering $5,000 grants to U.S. artists experiencing financial hardship.
Deadline: June 23, 2021.

Hyperallergic’s Journalism Fellowships for Curators
Hyperallergic is offering five $5,000 grants to support curators in research and realization of an email exhibition. Running from August to December, each fellowship will last one month.
Deadline: 12 p.m. EDT June 30, 2021.

Illuminations Grant for Black Trans Women Visual Artists
Queer | Art is hosting its second annual Illuminations Grant for Black Trans Women Visual Artists, which will award $10,000 to one winner and $1,250 to four finalists. Established to celebrate underrepresented artists and offer support for their work, the grant is open to those in the U.S. who self-identify as Black trans women and trans femmes.
Deadline: June 30, 2021.

The Neon Museum National Artist Residency

Backroads: The Art Less-Travelled at Vestige Concept Gallery
This open call from Pittsburgh’s Vestige Concept Gallery seeks artworks that venture off the beaten path, especially with regard to travel, and is open to artists in the U.S. and Canada. Projects could include hidden gems, special or unusual spots, wanderings, odd travel, strange encounters, and or “lost” and fading places. The $25 application fee includes two submissions.
Deadline: May 22, 2021.

 

Residencies & Grants

The Barbara and Carl Zydney Grant for Artists with Disabilities
This unrestricted grant gives $1,000 to artists with a disability who have experienced financial hardship due to COVID-19. It’s open to visual, media, music, performing, and literary artists who live in New York City.
Opens: May 4, 2021.

21c Artadia Award
The inaugural 21c Artadia Award launches in Louisville, Kentucky, this month and will provide $10,000 in unrestricted funds to one artist living and working in the creative communities where 21c Museum Hotels are located.
Opens: May 15, 2021.

WIRED Resilience Residency
The WIRED Resilience Residency is designed for non-journalists to tell the most powerful and urgent stories from their fields and to start new conversations through written features, photo essays, data visualizations, podcasts, videos, social media experiments, and other mediums. The residency starts in June and runs for six months.
Deadline: 11:59 p.m. PST on May 16, 2021.

Coney Family Fund
The Coney Family Fund will award two $5,000 grants to Chicago-based visual artists who identify as Black or African-American and are committed to sustainable studio practices and artistic career development. There is a $12 application fee.
Deadline: May 17, 2021.

Esalen Artist in Residence
Esalen Institute will bring three artists—writers, performers, visual artists, filmmakers, podcasters, activists, organizers, and ​philosophers, sociologists, and other types of social workers are encouraged to apply—to its Big Sur campus for a four-week period between June and September.
Deadline: May 17, 2021.

Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant
In its 2020 cycle, the Arts Writers Grant awarded a total of $675,000 to 22 writers. Ranging from $15,000 to $50,000 in three categories—articles, books, and short-form writing. Find more in the 2021 Application Guide.
Deadline: May 19, 2021.

The Farm Margaret River Funded Residency
Open to Western Australians working across disciplines, this residency grants one recipient $5,000 for research, creative development, and collaborations that are reflective of their time spent at the property. The artist will be announced in July 2021, with the residency scheduled to run for five to eight weeks between October and December.
Deadline: 5 p.m. AWST on May 28, 2021.

2022 AIRIE Residency
The Artists in Residence in Everglades is asking residents to engage with this question: how can we make the outdoors a space of belonging? Open to international applications across disciplines, AIRIE Fellows receive a $4,000 grant and up to a month-long stay in the Everglades. The application fee is $10.

Chicago Botanic Garden Call for Artists with $5k to $40k for Commissions Featured
The Chicago Botanic Garden will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2022. A series of public programs and art experiences will celebrate the Garden’s remarkable growth and will establish the tone for the next decade. The Garden is seeking Statements of Interest from artists for sculptures, installations, and experiences.
Deadline: April 12, 2021.

SUNY Oswego Outdoor Sculpture Initiative
SUNY Oswego seeks proposals for outdoor sculptures for the school’s main campus. Seven artists will be chosen to install artworks in a centrally located lawn area adjacent to SUNY Oswego’s Campus Center. Selected works will be on view for a three-year exhibition and become part of SUNY Oswego’s Campus.
Deadline: April 15, 2021.

Shine: Catching the Light Open Call
The Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center presents an open call for Shine: Catching the Light. The summer exhibition will feature artwork in which light is a prominent element in the piece. Cash awards. There is an application fee of $25.

Residencies & Grants

Chinati Foundation’s Artists in Residence
This residency provides artists with a stipend of $1,500 is provided to assist with travel and art materials, and studio and living spaces are on the museum’s grounds. There is an application fee of $40.
Opens: April 30, 2021.

Applications Open for the Noldor Arts Residency in Ghana
Noldor is Ghana’s first independent arts residency and fellowship program for contemporary African artists. Noldor is currently accepting applications for its annual four-week program for one emerging African artist from the continent or the African diaspora.
Deadline: Rolling basis.

Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant
In its 2020 cycle, the Arts Writers Grant awarded a total of $675,000 to 22 writers. Ranging from $15,000 to $50,000 in three categories—articles, books, and short-form writing. The 2021 cycle begins in two weeks, and you can prepare by referencing the 2021 Application Guide.

NOT REAL ART Grant
The grant provides $2,000 each to six contemporary artists working in the visual arts. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and reside in the U.S. or Canada.

Harpo Foundation Grants for Visual Artists
The award provides direct support of up to $10,000 to under-recognized visual artists 21 years or older. The application fee is $15.

CUE Art Foundation Open Calls for artists & curators
CUE Art Foundation is currently seeking solo exhibition and curatorial project proposals for the 2022 exhibition season. The Open Calls provide emerging and under-recognized artists and curators the necessary resources to realize an exhibition at CUE’s storefront gallery in East Chelsea, New York.

2021 Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize
The Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize is an annual non-acquisitive international art prize that celebrates diversity and excellence in the representational visual arts. It includes all static mediums, like traditional art, digital art, and photographic media, along with all styles from realism and hyperrealism to pop surrealism and lowbrow. The contest offers more than $45,000 worth of cash, services, and product prizes.
Deadline: July 17, 2021.

Bloomberg Philanthropies Asphalt Art Initiative [city-based]
Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Asphalt Art Initiative responds to the growing number of cities around the world embracing art as an effective and relatively low-cost strategy to activate their streets. Round 2 of the Asphalt Art Initiative was announced on March 2, 2021. The program will award up to 20 U.S. cities grants of up to $25,000 each, as well as on-call technical assistance.
Deadline: April 30, 2021.

Bridgeport Art Center 9th Annual Art Competition
The Bridgeport Art Center in Chicago announces a call for entries to a juried art competition and exhibition that will take place in its 4th-floor gallery this spring. It offers $3,000 in prizes, including a $1,000 best of show prize, $500 second prize, $300 third prize, and six additional $200 honorable mentions.
Deadline: April 15, 2021.

Driving the Human Open Call
Driving the Human invites designers, artists, scientists, initiatives, and agents from any field of expertise and anywhere in the world to join in shaping sustainable and collective futures that combine science, technology, and the arts in a trans-disciplinary and collaborative approach.

RITES OF PASSAGE: National Emerging Artists Exhibition
The Cincinnati-based nonprofit arts organization and gallery Manifest invites juniors, seniors, and recent undergrads to submit works of art for the 17th annual Rites of Passage exhibition. The Manifest Grand Jury Prize awards one cash prize ($2,500) to a single work selected as the “best of the entire season.”

Creative Capital Award Applications Now Open
Artists selected for a Creative Capital Award may receive up to $50,000 in funding for new projects, as well as a wide range of counsel, career development, and networking opportunities to make their work come to life. Deadline: March 1, 2021.

Designing a Better Chicago: Design Impact Grants
The Design Impact grant provides annual, project-specific grants to individuals and organizations using design or design principles to directly address pressing issues in Chicago communities. The program will award $25,000 in sum total. Deadline: March 12, 2021.

Francis Johnson Fellowships
Calling all performing artists, musicians, actors, visual artists, and other creative scholars and practitioners! America’s oldest cultural institution, the Library Company of Philadelphia, welcomes applications for a new grant that seeks to critically and creatively engage our African American history collections. Fellows will receive a stipend of $5,000, a $2,500 research fund to be defined by the fellow and program director, and lodging at the Library Company’s Cassatt House residence for four to eight weeks. Deadline: March 1, 2021.

Chicago Commissioning ‘Ambitious’ Public Art With $500K In Funding
As part of a large-scale grant effort, the city of Chicago is allocating $500,000 to commission up to 10 public art projects, with another $250,000 given to partners for smaller, local projects. Learn more at the CityArts Program and the Artist Response Program.

Creative Culture: Illuminated Trails US & UK
Creative Culture is seeking artists and designers to propose sculpture, installation, or interactive ideas for both their U.S. and U.K. light trail events. Deadline: February 19, 2021.

Ortega y Gasset Projects Announces an Open Call for Two Solo Exhibitions
Brooklyn-based Ortega y Gasset Projects are seeking applications for two solo exhibitions to open in September of 2021: one in the main gallery at OyG and one in The Skirt, OyG’s dedicated space for site-specific installations. Deadline: March 5, 2021.

Brilliant 2021: Artichoke commits over £50,000 to six commissions for the Lumiere Festival
The Lumiere light art festival is soliciting ideas for the Lumiere 2021 program. You don’t need to be a practicing artist to apply, and winners will receive support to realize their concept. Open to the entire U.K. Deadline: February 11, 2021.
