Interview with Federico Uribe

November 15, 2011

Christopher Jobson

Here’s a great interview with one of my favorite artists, Federico Uribe (previously) who uses repurposed objects like athletic shoes and hardware to create sculptures of animal and plant life. The video captures numerous shots of his current exhibition, The World According to Federico Uribe at the Boca Raton Museum of Art that’s still up through December 4. One of my favorite quotes from the video: “In time I learned that celebrating life was better than complaining about it.” Words to live by. The interview was produced and directed by David Marin of Pelicruise Film Group. (thnx, david!)

Stunning New Time Lapse Video from the International Space Station

November 12, 2011

Christopher Jobson

A few weeks ago a beautiful time lapse video shot from the International Space Station made the rounds. When I saw this new video pop up on Vimeo I assumed it was the same thing, but immediately realized it was something wholly more incredible, not to mention five times longer. This new (or newly edited?) video was shot with a special low-light 4K-camera by the crew of expeditions 28 and 29 onboard the ISS from August to October, 2011 and captures numerous shots of the Aurora Borealis. I recommend clicking HD full-screen for this one.

Keep Drawing

November 12, 2011

Christopher Jobson

A new rotoscopic animation by Seoul-based Studio Shelter (previously) in which every single frame is a different character in a different style, frequently switching mediums between pencils, pens, markers, and even paint. What a perfect and wonderful way to capture the frustrations and rewards of drawing through the medium itself. I watched the whole clip twice and was amazed, but it wasn’t until the third time when I started hitting pause repeatedly that I realized how many hundreds of hidden treasures flash before your eyes. I definitely recommend spending some time with it. Directed by Ha Juan.

What Goes Up: A Figurative Stop Motion

November 8, 2011

Christopher Jobson

I spotted this beautifully animated stop motion short by an artist named Lacey. In the words of my three year old son: “Oh dad, it’s a stick man! Oh oh oh no it’s a ROBOT! Ohhhhh NOW IT’S A LADY!!!” So that’s pretty much what you’re in for.

Art Documentary

Chris Sauter: The Whole World

November 4, 2011

Christopher Jobson

For his installation entitled “The Whole World”, artist Chris Sauter of San Antonio, Texas surgically extracted drywall components from the gallery walls and used the raw materials to construct a microscope and telescope. The kicker being that the footprints left by the removed pieces formed an amoeba-like slide and a starry sky. Sauter talks about his work and process in another fantastic documentary from
Walley Films (previously), who are quickly becoming my favorite art filmmakers of all time. Video stills above courtesy Walley Films.
