To celebrate the recent summer solstice, residents of Poznań, Poland gathered to break the country’s record for releasing paper lanterns by setting 8,000 of the glowing lights aloft. Many more videos here. (via the awesomer)

Animation Craft

An Animated Embroidered Dog

June 23, 2011

Christopher Jobson

I can say with absolute certainty that in over 1,100 posts on Colossal this is the first featuring an animated gif. This is the work of Atlanta-based Aubrey Longley-Cook who created this animated dog by photographing the backside of the embroideries that it’s made from. (via lustik)

Animals

June 17, 2011

Christopher Jobson

Perhaps a counterbalance to yesterday’s extinction calendar, this wonderful animal video shot on location in Costa Rica by Los Angeles-based filmmaker Douglas Burgdorff. I giggled to read “you just out Malicked Malick with this” in the comments on Vimeo, as I was thinking this is what an episode of National Geographic would look like if directed by Terrence Malick. Visual poetry. Set to Time Lapse by Michael Nyman, and beware bug eating.

A beautifully choreographed dance performance inside a wind tunnel at Skydive Arena in Prague. What glorious fun this must be. Music by Casiokids, if you’re into that sorta thing. (via neatorama)

June 12, 2011

Christopher Jobson

I usually like to give you a few screen shots to show what happens in a music video, but I can’t ruin the surprise for this one. The latest video for Best Coast directed by Daniel Garcia. (via cliptip)

Design

New Hand-Cut Typography from Bianca Chang

June 8, 2011

Christopher Jobson

Sydney-based designer and paper artist Bianca Chang (previously) creates beautifully complex typographic sculptures by sequentially cutting shifting forms out of dozens if not hundreds of sheets of paper. Once stacked, the three dimensional letterforms are born. She recently recorded this great stop motion piece for Sydney’s A4 Paper Festival. I’m really excited to see her work progressing and can’t wait to see where it leads her. (via picked by six)
