Stick & Stones

May 25, 2011

Christopher Jobson

(click thumbnail for full panorama)

This wonderful 200 foot (63 meter) mixed-media mural reading “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will always save me” was recently installed in Adelaide, Australia by street artist ABOVE who fell while working on the installation, breaking his scapula in two places and suffering a concussion that required two hospital visits. Luckily he wasn’t working alone and a number of other talented artists helped to complete the project including illustrator and wood-carver Chris Edser, designer Tristan Kerr, public artist ANKLES, and Joshua Fanning. A big thanks to photographer Jonathan VDK for providing his images for the post. Definitely click the panorama thumbnail above to see the completed piece. (via unurth)

Need/Want Glass

April 29, 2011

Christopher Jobson

The Need/Want Glass from Alesina Design encourages you to think about wasting water every time you take a drink. By holding your finger over a hole in the glass, you consciously permit yourself to have more water than you might “need”. This is all subjective I’m sure, and if you could somehow apply the concept to watering your lawn or taking a bath it might be even more effective. Still, got me thinking. Each glass is hand finished, numbered, and signed. Available here.

Over It: 14 Miles of String

January 25, 2011

Christopher Jobson

This stringed typography was an experiment in collaboration between no less than eighteen Portland creatives for a 2010 show called OVER IT.

Can 18 disparate Portland artists, writers, designers, art directors, fashion designers and illustrators get together and work as a singular unit to make art? Probably not. But Chris Hutchinson, Damion Triplett, David Neevel, Jelly Helm studio, Jennie Hayes, Jimm Lasser, Julia Blackburn, Julia Oh, Kate Bingaman-Burt, Marco Kaye, Mike Giepert, Official MFG CO, Portland Foreign Legion, Scrappers, and Taylor Twist got together and tried anyway.

The result is OVER IT, an experiment in creating as a group, letting go, disagreement, misunderstanding, backpedaling and trust.

Lots more photos here. (via designspiration and aaron rayburn)
