Artist Alexandre Dubosc (previously), known for his whirling cake zoetropes, just release this new piece he calls the Phytopage. While not as creepy as his earlier Tim Burton-inspired cake, any kind of animated cake is fine with me.

Some of most amazing contemporary artists working in the realm of optical illusion have been brought together for a fantastic show called Illusion at Science Gallery in Dublin, Ireland. Curated by psychologist and author Richard Wiseman and researched by magician and escapologist (!) Paul Gleeson, the exhibition explores the myriad ways the mind is tricked through sensory deception. The show includes works from Roseline de Thelin, Gregory Barsamian, Matt Kenyon, Jonty Hurwitz (previously), and many more. Illusion runs through September 29, 2013.

Stop by the Phillip Island Chocolate Factory near Melbourne, Australia and you’re likely to encounter this tasty zoetrope made almost entirely of chocolate. A zoetrope is a device that creates the optical illusion of motion using rapid succession of static pictures or objects, several of which you can see right here on Colossal, including one made out of cake! Here’s a wonderful zoetrope animation using paper discs mounted on bicycle wheels by Katy Beveridge as part of her 3rd year dissertation project at CSM in London. Beveridge mentions being partially influenced by the technique of Tim Wheatley who has also explored the ideas of bicycle-wheel animation. See many more zoetrope videos previously on Colossal. Edible Zoetropes

May 23, 2011

Christopher Jobson

First we had the Cylotrope and then the Turntable Phonotrope and now the whirling edible creation of Alexandre Dubosc called Alimation created for the 2011 Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Using crepes, cakes, and towers of matches Dubosc attempts to “animate the taste buds.”

If you liked last week’s Cyclotrope, you’ll dig this collaboration between DJ Maclom Goldie and the Institute of Contemporary Arts London. On the Vimeo page they discuss how it “kind of didn’t work” however I politely disagree, this thing is flippin’ sweet. (via lookva)
