Enchanting New Light Box Dioramas by Hari & Deepti Tell Stories of Exploration, Travel and Adventure

It’s been over a year since we last checked in with artist duo Deepti Nair and Harikrishnan Panicker of Hari & Deepti, who construct elegantly cut paper dioramas inside backlit light boxes. The medium is perfect for depicting the depth of thick forests, pools of water, or subterranean caves inhabited by spirits and fantastic creatures.

Over the last year Hari & Deepti relocated from Denver to Mumbai where they just completed work for their first European show at Blank Space Gallery in Oslo titled ‘We Are All Made of Stars.’ Like previous exhibitions the event was held in a darkened gallery with the only light emitted from their artwork to better emphasize the themes of travel and adventure depicted in their light boxes.

Backlit Paper Sculptures by Hari & Deepti

As part of a new exhibition at Black Book Gallery in Denver, artists Deepti Nair and Harikrishnan Panicker (aka. Hari & Deepti), have created a new body of work titled “Oh, The Places You Will Go!” The artist couple were inspired by recent travels through Moab, Utah and Yellowstone, Wyoming, and transformed elements of their adventures into delicately hand-cut paper sculptures infused with mythology and science fiction. Each piece is lit from behind or below with LED strips and the boxes are exhibited in dark rooms to enhance the effect.

Most recently Hari & Deepti completed a commission for Neil Patrick Harris titled “The Magician’s Hat” inspired by the “Rabbit in the Moon” legend, shown below. They will also have work on view at Art Basel Miami 2014 with Scope International Contemporary Art Show.

We’ve been huge fans of Hari & Deepti here on Colossal since first encountering their work early this year. It’s with great honor that we currently have a few of their sculptures gracing the masthead of this very website. Illuminated Cut Paper Light Boxes by Hari & Deepti

Deepti Nair and Harikrishnan Panicker (known collectively as Hari & Deepti) are an artist couple who create paper cut light boxes. Each diorama is made from layers of cut watercolor paper placed inside a shadow box and is lit from behind with flexible LED light strips. The small visual narratives depicted in each work often play off aspects of light including stars, flames, fireflies, and planets.
The couple shares about their work:

Paper is brutal in its simplicity as a medium. It demands the attention of the artist while it provides the softness they need to mold it into something beautiful. It is playful, light, colorless and colorful. It is minimal and intricate. It reflects light, creates depth and illusions in a way that it takes the artist through a journey with limitless possibilities.

What amazes us about the paper cut light boxes is the dichotomy of the piece in its lit and unlit state, the contrast is so stark that it has this mystical effect on the viewers.

Hari & Deepti are originally from India but now live and work in Denver. Their work most recently appeared at SCOPE New York through Black Book Gallery.
