The Last Honey Hunter: One Man’s Quest to Gather Honey From the Cliffs of Rural Nepal

The Last Honey Hunter was released in 2017, but is new to us at Colossal and is a powerful story worth a watch at any point. Set in rural Nepal, the half hour documentary chronicles the Kulung culture’s traditions of honey collection. Using precarious methods to scale treacherous cliffs, the Kulung seek to harvest a particular type of psychotropic honey that has spiritual significance to the community. We won’t seek to paraphrase the intricacies of the tradition; when you have some time, go into full screen mode and sink in to the story.

Written and directed by Ben Knight, The Last Honey Hunter is a co-production of Camp4 Collective and Felt Soul Media, in association with National Geographic and with the community expertise of dZi Foundation. You can also read about the Kulung honey rituals in a National Geographic article.

A Mt. Everest Time-Lapse Combines a Decade of Himalayan Explorations

Adventurer and filmmaker Elia Saikaly has attempted to scale Mt. Everest seven times. Twice he has reached the mountain’s summit, while other times he has survived avalanches, an earthquake, and other life-affirming events during his climbs. Saikaly’s latest short film is a combination of footage from a decade worth of trips to Mt. Everest and the Himalayas. The collected time-lapse videos explore several aspects of the climb, from shots of lights inside the small tents pitched for frigid nights, to brilliant star formations and unexpected waves of cloud cover. Infrared Photographs of Nepal Look Like Something Out Of A Dr. Seuss Book

New York-based photographer Sean Lynch was in Nepal in September and captured these surreal, infrared photographs of Nepal. The photos were taken in the Annapurna Himalayan Range but their unique, reddish quality makes them look like something out of a Dr. Seuss book. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Cat in the Hat fall out of the sky with a loud “Bump.” You can see the entire set over on his tumblr site dorialusium.

The Travel Photography of Lukas Kozmus

While on a backpacking trip through India two years ago, 23-year-old student Lukas Kozmus realized how much he enjoyed using his tiny Sony camera to photograph the Ganges river, the Taj Mahal and other sights. After returning he quickly purchased a better DSLR and took it with him on treks to visit the Himalayas in Nepal, to Indonesia, and of course carried it around his native Berlin, all the while snapping the wonderfully dreamlike images you see here. I think this could be a bit more than a hobby, no? Lukas tells me he’s preparing for a trip to Morocco and I can’t wait to see what he brings back. You can see more of his work on Flickr.
