Drive Through Indonesia with Rebel Riders, A Group That Modifies Vespas with Idiosyncratic Designs

June 28, 2020

Grace Ebert

“One Vespa, a million brothers,” says Nando Anjasmara Azani. The Vespa enthusiast is part of Rebel Riders, a community in Indonesia dedicated to modifying the Italian scooters. In a recent video by Great Big Story, Azani and his compatriots share a glimpse into their pastime that includes altering the body with extra wheels and adorning the exterior with tree branches, animal skulls, and other finds. Every year, the group meets up to tinker with each others’ rides in multiple celebrations that occur on each island in Indonesia.

Check out the tricked-out scooters and dive into more of Great Big Story’s adventures around the world on YouTube. (via Uncrate)

The Fenders of a Vintage Volkswagen Beetle are Reimagined as a Pair of “Volkspod” Scooters

November 13, 2019

Laura Staugaitis

Brent Walter is ready to pop a wheelie on old VW Bug fenders. Walter repurposed an original Volkswagen Beetle to form the dramatically curved body of his “Volkspod” and built an engine and chassis to fit below. The just-for-fun project began about a year ago, seemingly from the comfort of Walter’s garage/workshop. He has been documenting his progress on Instagram, where people have caught wind of his invention. No word yet on whether the bespoke creations will be for sale; in the meantime, you can vicariously experience the wild ride of a Volkspod in the action video Walter shared on Instagram. Multiverse: Hiroshi Kondo’s Dizzying Documentation of Taiwan’s Busy Streets

May 15, 2019

Laura Staugaitis

Tokyo-based filmmaker Hiroshi Kondo captures the endless movement of urban environments in his fast-moving short films. Kondo often homes in on one specific element of city living, like street lights—or, in his new short film, scooter commuters. Multiverse follows riders as they move in swarms, their density highlighted through time-lapse. At certain moments, Kondo focuses on an individual rider, which emphasizes unique journeys within the teaming repetition. Multiverse’s music and sound design is by Himuro Yoshiteru. You can watch more of Kondo’s dizzying films on Vimeo. (via Colossal Submissions)

Vintage Vespa Parts Recontextualized as Sleek Modern Office Furniture

March 21, 2016

The sleek build of Vespa scooters have been redesigned to remain stationary, dissected and rebuilt as office furniture. Fit for an Italian motorist, the Scooter Chair, is handmade by Spanish studio Bel & Bel in a numbered series with a large variety of color combinations to choose for your office or home. Although it may appear like a normal swivel chair from the front, when turned around you can see how the curves of the vintage Vespa parts match that of the faux leather chair to create a sleek and ergonomic design.

To further imitate their design inspiration, each chair also comes with functioning taillights. More than 200 of these up-cycled pieces have been sold around the world, and because each and every chair is built by hand, they are all certifiably unique. To understand the process of making one of Bel & Bel’s chairs, visit their blog. (My Modern Met)
