Oritsunagumono Redux
After several weeks of searching I finally managed to get in touch with Takayuki Hori the creator of the Oritsunagumono endangered animal origami collection that I posted here a while back. He provided some fantastic additional images and I was able to share them in my latest post over on designboom.

The Devil’s Pet Candle
Thorunn Arnadottir is a London-based designer originally from Iceland. Her latest project, The Devil’s Pet, is an innocent geometric kitten candle that once lit reveals a ghostly metal skeleton.
The ball of yarn is the candle wick itself, so it will end up as a devilish looking scorned cat skeleton with the ball of yarn on fire on its side. […] The candle brings to light (literally) the contrasting and rich typologies attached to an every day object such as a candle and how we seem to have lost sight of it’s original function and meaning.
See a few more images over on NOTCOT. (via who killed bambi?)

Abstract Apocalypse: The Paintings of Konstantin Batynkov
This weekend while looking through a couple dozen Russian art gallery web sites (isn’t that how you spend your weekend?) I discovered these truly surreal paintings by Moscow-based Konstantin Batynkov. I urge you to click on his works to view them larger, as it’s difficult to discern exactly what’s happening in the frenzied brush strokes of each painting. Helicopters and skydivers dot the sky like the black plumes of anti-aircraft fire, while dinosaurs and knights on horseback joust on the horizon. Flying submarines, hovering trains of semi-trailer trucks, everything quixotic and anarchistic all at once. Really amazing stuff.

Toothpick Typography
Swiss design student Jérôme Haldemann was given the class assignment of creating a font based on an animal theme. The animal he received at random: a hedgehog. Behold his prickly, three-dimensional interpretation of Bodoni: TYPICK. Thanks Jérôme for sharing your work with Colossal!
