Realistic Garnishes Top Sushi and Other Fishy Sculptures Carved Entirely from Stone

Mari Hamahira’s sushi appears like tender slices of tuna and creamy sea urchin, but its texture is nothing like the soft, rice-based bites. From rough slabs of stone, the artist carves lifelike nigiri and rolls of gunkan-maki that are assembled into deceptively realistic sculptures and garnished with scallion rings, wasabi, and tiny mounds of roe. The coloring of each work is derived entirely from the material’s natural pigments, whether through smoothing and polishing or combining powdered granules into new hues.
Mixed within the delectable offerings are more unsettling pieces that include human body parts like fingers, brains, and ears. A critique of consumption and wastefulness, the series is in response to the artist’s work in the seafood industry, where he witnessed creatures harvested for their meat and then subsequently thrown away without being eaten.

Selfish: An Animated Short Explores the Tragic Impacts of Plastic Pollution
In “Selfish,” what opens with a benign scene at a sushi restaurant quickly turns into a dire assessment of plastic pollution. Created by Canada-based animator PoChien Chen, the appropriately named film begins by a chef plucking a detergent bottle from a pile of fresh fish, assembling various dishes made entirely of waste material, and subsequently serving them to a horrified trio of aquatic life. It then dives into a disturbing series of facts and figures about the current state of our oceans and the effects of pollution on wildlife.
Chen said in a statement that the critical animation was inspired by a visit to a small island in Taiwan two years ago:
It was the closest I’d lived to the sea, being only a 10 minute drive away. Everyone can enjoy the beach with its white sand and turquoise ocean. At the time, I went snorkeling almost every week. Seeing such alluring tropical fish and coral reefs sill lingers in my mind. However, I also cannot forget the scenes of tons of human waste lying around the shore as if it were a part of nature.

A Chef Demonstrates the Emotional Steps of How To Make Sushi
“How to Make Sushi” outlines all the necessary tasks to assemble maki: slice your fish, spread the rice, bleed from avocado hand, sweat all over your workspace, spend years agonizing over perfection, and finally, slice your roll into bite-sized pieces. Enjoy?
Made by London-based director and 3D designer Jonathan Lindgren, the humorous animation provides a quirky look at mastering a craft. It’s complete with the basic kitchen skills like cleaning a knife and gathering ingredients, in addition to more emotional labor like ending a romantic relationship and rising early each day.
Lindgren said the instructional project began in 2018 when he created a few frames based on the lives of sushi chefs. After consulting with Luke Brown from The Soundery on a score and actor Yoshi Amao, the director created the short film. “Always being inspired by Japanese animation, this turned into an emulation of many years of reading manga and watching anime. Also seeing how the amazing craftsmanship and graphic design was used in Isle of Dogs definitely influenced me a lot while making this,” he said.

A Time-Lapse Look at the Making of Isle of Dogs’s Animated Sushi Master
Did you know that the sushi-making scene in Wes Anderson’s latest film Isle of Dogs took over a month to produce? In a recent time-lapse video, animator Andy Biddle (who has previously worked on Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox and the Grand Budapest Hotel) shows the detailed steps he took for the film’s sushi master to prepare a bento box of crab and octopus. The 32-day shoot was created by Biddle and Tony Farquhar-Smith, who took over the scene at its mid-point when Biddle left to work on another project. Their hands fly around the set, yet the character’s false appendages seem to effortlessly glide across the table, handling undulating tentacles and perfectly slicing segments of fish. Shoe-Shi: Edible Sneakers That Combine an Artist’s Love of Footwear and Sushi
Milan-based Yujia Hu is an artist and chef who really likes to play with his food. The 28-year-old’s newest invention is “shoe shi,” sneakers and other types of footwear crafted from rice, seaweed, and raw fish. The miniature kicks are mostly sneakers, but also include a few pairs of slip on sandals, and are each 100% edible. Every shoe takes Hu about 30 minutes to produce, and often finalizes the work by adding the logo of a recognisable brand such as Nike, Adidas, or Supreme.
