Microscopic Universes Come Alive in Nikon’s Small World in Motion Contest

The Cyerce kikutarobabai is a tiny, vibrantly colored species of sea slug. In a video awarded honorable mention by Nikon’s Small World in Motion competition, Dr. Igor Adameyko captures the moving creature inhabiting the reefs of Okinawa. An Instagram post by the biologist reveled that the animal is just 3 millimeters long.

The marvelous sight is just one of the notable videos from the annual competition, which just celebrated its 16th cycle. This year’s panel welcomed esteemed scientists, researchers, and science communicators who evaluated more than 340 video entries from 40 different countries. Watch more winning videos on the contest’s website and stay posted for winners of the Nikon Small World photo competition, which will be announced on October 21.

Update: The winning video of this competition was removed after Nikon later confirmed that AI was used in the post-processing of the work. Competition rankings have been adjusted to reflect this decision.
